Here's my attempt at this month's tune - an unfortunate and low-key postscript to my previous offering.

That's excellent, GbH. Another brilliant vid and good playing too.

I had a similar idea for the tune, but not the wit to go with it. Here it is:

There's the odd firework going off in the background, I think. If that helps.

Wow...the varieties of interpretation are stunning. Can't wait to see what shows up next.

Anyway, here's my humble offering:

I think that we of this forum should start a campaign for the resurrection of Ernest.  It can't end this way.

Spot on j.w.forrest - beautiful.

This youtube isn't our present tune, but it's another nice example of danceable mazurka rhythm (on the slow side). As a democrat I would of course defend to the death the Right of British sessioners to play mazurka in a quite different way, or indeed of your local bodhran or shakey egg player to join in, in jig rhythm  >:E

great job jb! I love the drone of the bagpipes effect throughout.

jb + j.w.forrest - noticably contrasting versions, yet both left me thinking 'wow, I didn't expect that'.

With the bagpipe thing, it hadn't occured to me to change the drone, yet I really liked that when it shifted half way through.  I also thought the pauses were interesting - that's something I've tried elsewhere, but felt somehow uncomfortable about doing.  Perhaps I need to do it with more confidence.

As for the one row, I hadn't realised that such an instrument could be played like that.  It's not the sort of tune that, with my limited experience, I would have associated with a cajun instrument.  Yet I thought it worked really well, adding it's own flavour without straying too far from what the tune seems to be about.

Here's my attempt at this month's tune - an unfortunate and low-key postscript to my previous offering.  This time around, I've chosen to use a rare mouth-blown melodeon, necessary for the authentic bagpipe sound that the music's back-story so clearly requires.

Are you putting Ernest in a blue top bin there ??  does this mean hes recyclable? ???

That would, indeed, seem to be the case.  The dustmen paid a visit today, though, so I guess it's too late for any last minute surprises.

Come to think of it, I did here some knocking outside of my front window last night, but assumed it was just more fireworks.  Hmm.

You should go to the St Chartier festival 15-18 July 2010.
For first time ever (IME) not including 14th July Bastille Day!  :-\

http://www.saintchartier.org/en/accueil.php  NB no longer in St Chartier village!

130 instrument makers attending next year. The semi official follow-on 15-25 July ...

.. is pure dance. (and they teach it)  Chris

This is lovely j.w., I enjoyed it very much,  though I am a bit concerned about your guitar player. Between him and Ernest there seems to be a thread of callousness this month - maybe it is the funereal nature of the tune  ::)

Here is my first offering for the month, slow droney version. Not as practised as I would have liked but time is tight at the moment. Also the sound is a bit quite as I was recording it in a hotel room in Vienna - anyway excuses over

Enjoy! (That is an order  (:) )

Thank you Lester. I think 'droney' works really well with this tune.

Cheers

sounds lovely to me

btw. I was going to say..I'm bringing my little pink camera with 'youtube mode' with me to Witney so if there is time and anyone wants their playing of TOTM filmed let me know. I'm quite happy to...and then email the results to the respective players.
