Here is a second realization of L'Inconnu de Limoise, this time arranged for and played with my popular wife.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By3LuRQhcGQ

I liked the droning so much in other videos here (jb: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTevGEW89KU, GbH: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5q2_8aPqqYY) I decided to use it in the first half. And to make the mother-in-law happy, I had to wear the turtleneck sweater she sent me to weather cold Paris --- which is now being used to stop a draft in our cold apartment!

Extra points for anyone who recognizes the source for the story in the background!

Wow, this is really nice.  Even though I now know the tune well, I still didn't guess how the arrangement was going to progress.  Good work!

This is beautiful - I love the way it starts hauntingly then progresses to a more upbeat ending. Great sweater (:)

Is it a Hitchcock film?

Thank you everybody!

It is not a Hitchcock film, but the same era. It was exclusively an American show --- Outer Limits: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Outer_Limits_(1963_TV_series)

The exact episode I appropriated the footage from is "The Forms of Things Unknown": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Forms_of_Things_Unknown

The time travel device in this episode is used to bring the dead back to life. So I thought about using it on the piper. :/

It wasn't exclusively American. Outer Limits was networked here in UK. It was rather famous for its theremin music.

But I'm afraid that wasn't going to help me recognise the clip .. I'd have said Hitchcock too!

have a really big glass of port to get into the mood, and see what comes out perhaps?

I took my own advice and got out the port! And wouldn't you know it... here's L'Inconnu de Limoise as a 5/4 waltz.  ;D

Sorry Maxou, I know it's not really that true to your original intentions when you wrote the tune, but when I tried this version out, it sounded to my sozzled ears, rather better than the jig alternative I was considering, so maybe we all got off lightly?

I promise not to do this every month. But let's be honest, I'm probably going to do it more often than I should.

Enjoy,

Clive

That's so good. The tune sits really well on that rhythm and that relaxed tempo. And some lovely touches in the melody too. Great stuff.

Superb interpretation Clive and the 5/4 sits really well. One of these days I'll figure out how to do that but maybe not for a while.

And you managed to blow us a kiss at 1:54 and 2:20, or was I imagining it?

I thought it was more like an impersonation of Windsor Davies in It Ain't Half Hot Mum ...  ;D

That's a nice surprise.  People seem to have been more cautious with this month's tune (I know I felt like that with it), yet this is a good (and for me, unexpected) lesson in how a more fundamental change can still work really well.  I'm really learning a great deal from this TOTM thing.

Here's my first attempt at the LIDL tune - a bit more rushed in the 2nd half than I would have liked, due to nerves!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oniUS8ebw4I

Played in F on a de-clubbed Hohner Preciosa in C/F. It's a powerful little box with the tuning giving it, I feel, a sort of French cafe sound. The 'snatchy' action of the air button - due, I think, to it opening 2 air holes simultaneously, to provide more air intake - takes a bit of getting used to, and it's position in relation to my thumb, and sharp pointiness, don't make for the easiest action. Easier to tame in tunes such as this, which have lots of long drawn out notes, than in tunes with lots of quick reversals - where it's apt to snap the bellows shut if you're not careful!

Gorblimey Di - it's very different from the tune I thought I'd learned. Rather prettier in fact.

In my playing I must have Gavified it even more than I usually do!

Well done you.

Diane

I really liked this and the box looks and sounds wonderful. Excuse my ignorance but what is de-clubbed, or should I say what does club mean?

Blimey. Seriously meaty basses you have there - and/or pretty wild acoustics on your staircase. (Are you playing on the naughty step, btw?)
Sounds great to me, anyway. Good one.

jb I have noticed that you are brilliant in looking at 'the whole picture' . 10/10 for observations which I am enjoying. :D I must remember not to have anything 'untoward' in the background of my future videos  ;D

cheers

Sandy
