I hope this entire thread gets deleted. It serves no useful purpose whatsoever.

I hate censorship of any kind - whatsoever - but the terms 'Herbert' and 'Little Git' although probably meant in all good humour, are probably a step or three too far. The young lad in question is a brilliantly talented musician. I question what our collective response would have been if he'd been playing a diatonic accordion? Probably put him up for an early saint-hood alongside JK? I love seeing and hearing such gifted, and talented young musicians. This forum is such a friendly and amiable sort of place, so very enjoyable. And people should be able to say what they genuinely feel. On this occasion, I believe the initial correspondent was using a kind of arcane humour only to be found in Middleearth England. Perhaps a title change from the correspondent would be in order?

Ditto, but on this occasion... I have to agree with the other posters. Nothing new of melodeon interest added by the thread (we've already seen the video), and a nice little argument starting to brew... so pardon a slight slip of the old editorial biro.

Cheers,

Clive

I think as my original post is no longer here, and this debate is raging on that i must post an apology. I believe that i was the person that described the child accordianist as a " little Herbert". In my defence; It is a term that I and everyone I know uses to describe children and there is no malice or offence behind the expression. I call my nieces and nephews the same as a term of endearment.

However I accept that I have offended peoples sensibilities on here and so I apologise unreservedly for using the term, and I hope this apology is accepted without too much admonishment from people on here.

I am still not entirely sure what the insult is supposed to mean  :P

A Herbert (little or otherwise) is the runt of a litter, someone who's not quite there. Nicky obviously understands the expression in an entirely and much more benign way but it's not something I would ever use as a term of endearment.

Nicky is obviously genuinely distressed that the thread has caused offence and hopes that the sincere apology offered is enough. For my part it is and I'm sorry that the long memory of old farts like myself still associate certain phrases with specific meanings.

'Little Git' however remains unexplained. 'tis hard to equate that to begrudging admiration.

Pete.

As I said, I think its jealously. I played at a festival a few weeks a go and people kept telling me how much they hated me, then asked me if I had any Cds for sale.  ??? :P

Dear All,
Again, the use of the word "git" in my appraisal of the child prodigy was not meant to be taken as offensively as it was. I have used it as a form of very mild rebuke to my friends and family. And have done since the days of "Blackadder" in the 1980's. It is allowed before the watershed by the BBC and I really do no consider it an offensive word.

However, i also understand that I have caused offence to some of the contributors to this forum and will choose my words far more carefully before posting again.

Relates to 'get' in its 'beget' form. Originally implied - shall we say 'orphan'. I've not heard it used other than pejoratively.   But this is nothing to do with melodeons.  I concur - whole thead into Room 101.

Forget it Nick - you've eaten enough humble pie. It's gone - except for the etymologists amongst the members of the forum. I've not given you a proper welcome, for which I apologise - this is a great place, and very good humoured. What do you play?

Indeed it is... and you're very welcome here Nick. Enough on this I think - no further discussions or apology necessary! Thread locked for the sanity of all  ;D
