Pipe Tunes on the Box?
« on: October 24, 2009, 09:29:38 AM »

Thought I'd start a new thread as 'Banks of Sicily' thread was meandering off into this area.  ;D

Am interested in learning some pipe tunes on the box - has anyone got a favourite they'd like to suggest I have a look at. Have just been going at 'The Bloody Fields of Flanders' (what a wonderful tune and so appropriate at this time of year as we get close to November 11th, it'll be my own personal totm in November for sure) any more?

Hector the Hero - originally a fiddle tune but also popular on the pipes.

Adieu aux
fils de mon pays

Semi trad French - brought here by Rosbif. Played simply in G, and as a slow march rather than a 2-step (these chaps are going off to die after all)! Works well against a real bagpiper - the melodeon gets to play chords.
Calanesh by Hamish Moore. Play it in E minor but on the G row.  Another sad one.

I'm fairly certain, on the word of a piper that Miss Irene Meldurm's welcome to Bon Accorde is a pipe tune, though I've only ever heard it played on 'box & fiddle.

I would have suggest The Battle of the Somme but Theo beat me to it. Try it as a slow air, it's lovely. As for northumbrian pipe tunes, a fair few are transcribed in abc in a thread I started on concertina.net.

Phew! What to leave out, especially from the marches! I've limited myself to three suggestions, standards and personal favourites, in each of the categories of pipe tunes.

Airs/Slow Marches:
Mist Covered Mountains; Highland Cradle Song; My Home.

Retreat Marches:
The Bloody Fields of Flanders; The Highland Brigade at Magersfontein; Lochanside.

2/4 Marches:
Father John MacMillan of Barra; Balmoral Highlanders (incl parts 5 & 6 by PM GS McLennan); The Taking of Beaumont Hamel.

4/4 Marches:
The Old Rustic Bridge; Murdo's Wedding; Flett From Flotta.

6/8 Marches:
Farewell To The Creeks; Heights of Cassino; Dovecote Park.

Jigs:
The Jig of Slurs; Dr Flora MacAuley of Carradale; Kenny Gillies of Portnalong.

Reels:
Mrs MacLeod of Raasay; The Drunken Piper; The Brolum.

Strathspeys:
Dorrator Bridge; Louden's Bonnie Woods and Braes; Susan MacLeod.

Hornpipes:
Tam Bain's Lum; Crossing The Minch; The Man From Skye.

There are some cracking tunes there. I hope there are some that you like.

Where do these outlandish names for pipe tunes come from, I mean who ever met a drunken piper?

(P.S) any chance of dots for Flet from Flotta?

I'd suggest you buy a book of bagpipe tunes by the Scots gaurds or any other band.  Usually have all the favourite tunes with a lot of others too.  These books have been around for years and I'm pretty sure they will still be available.

I also love pipe tunes.  I recently learned The Heights of Dargai from The Fiddle Music of The Scottish Highlands
ceol na fidhle volumes one and two.  Great book with chords to help with row crossing decisions.  Anyway the version of Heights of Dargai in the book is Key of A.  The G# never comes up. Most of the tune is on the pull with plenty of D chord and runs to allow one to close the bellows.  It is a great version for lots of row crossing while using chord drones (with 3rds out).  I like to get the drones going to imitate the pipes.  Captain Campbell and Campbells Farewell to Red Castle or (Red Gap - with the extra 3rd part) and The High Road to Linton follow quite well from Heights and keep the key of A idea going.  I put this grouping together in an effort to produce an air, march, strathspey, reel set but since I play strathspeys like hornpipes, I had to change the order of the tunes to build up tension and speed.
Any other great pipetunes for D/G melodeon?
Thank you!  Eric in Montana

I have the same thoughts, in spades, when I see the names of Morris dancing tunes.

Flett from Flotta - here you go:

I think all of the tunes I listed, except Allan MacDonald's "Dr Flora MacAuley of Carradale", are in the Scots Guards books, vols 1 & 2, available from The National Piping Centre.Taigh na Teud publisher's website.

Its a lot of fun playing pipe tunes on the C row as they're written. I'm sure we've all done it.  Try Atholl Highlanders, comes out all sort of eastern european or something, add a few accidentals as necessary. Bingo. Bought a copy of Logan's Bagpipe tutor to learn the pipes from, try some of the excercises in the back for a laugh.

I enjoy playing 'When the Battle is Over' on the melodeon. It can be heard on Paul Scourfield's myspace. (hope he doesn't mind)
