Streb discussion, moved from TOTM

Strange as it might sound, my last StP attempt came about as a direct result if watching Lester's Streb video.  I figured that if it was OK to play the tune using lots of different virtual instrument sounds, maybe it would work with (mostly!) real instruments too.  So, maybe that's another way of achieving a 'poor person's' Streb?

Cor! ....If only a STREB sounded like a melodeon! ... blimey that would be good! ..... But it doesn't!... its a keyboard in a box! ....Traditional instuments don't need plugging in (or Batteries) ..... for me ...falls into the same category as amplified traditional music for dancers in streets ...i.e "should be banned for standalone use in public!" >:E >:E >:E >:E >:E >:E (he said in a provocative way)

For concerts, recording and studio production, microphone / pickup amplification etc  is an essential and as such a STREB has its place.... but I personally hope never to see one in a street or a pub session!

Maybe a little bit controversial ... and may start a new thread!.... but its my personal view!  after spending years working on transposing DG / CF / GC into other key skills the traditional Box and all that caused its development is paramount , One guy on here plays a 1 row in at least 4 keys ... stunning!!.... A Streb remains IMHO a keyboard in a box (i don't get it...sorry) If i need all those sounds i'll use my keyboard :D

My name is Lester and I am a Streb player.

So as you are a self professed "don't get it" why do you want it banned. Strikes me to be a bit totalitarian  ;D

I use my Streb now and again at sessions and most every one likes it, I use my 1 row now and again at sessions and most every one likes it I also use my Erica now and again at sessions and most every one likes it. So best you avoid me in case I'm having a Streb day.

I wonder why they raise such vehement criticism? See this thread http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,2742.0.html

Would you two please consider stepping out of the 'Speed the Plough' thread, and once outside .. settle it like gentlemen.  I understand there is a very suitable banjo tune for this sort of thing.   :D

[edit] Help ???  I'm outside too!

Streb .....a synth in a box?   .... total convenience! (No! ...that is not a toilet analogy)

sounds like a synth.... anyone surprised by that ;D

I'm with Lester, always baffled by the Luddite reaction some people have to midi controllers and electronically generated sound.

Lets get this straight from the off - the Streb is not a melodeon! It's a stand alone button accordion synthesizer and midi controller. It's quite a sophisticated synth as it happens because not all of the sounds produced are electronically generated (the standard midi sound set). The Streb uses midi control to playback actual sound samples of real instruments. The quality of the sounds produced in this mode are entirely dependent on the amplification used, good quality outboard gear will no doubt be far superior to the built in amp.

The thing I find most intriguing about this type of synth is the ability to switch between keyboard layouts, allowing the player to experiment with other systems without the cost of buying more boxes only to find you can't get on with them.

One thing I will say about midi controllers is that they are only good at producing the sounds of the same instrument type as the controller. Thus a keyboard cannot accurately emulate a saxophone, you would need a wind controller for that; my Roland guitar synth is pretty good at mimicking things with strings but not anything else really.

Finally, as LDT has already pointed out, the ability to practice in silence is a great bonus.

Pete.

It does more than 'keyboard in a box' -- for a start off it has pressure-sensitive bellows. But even if it were just a keyboard in a box, it's a load more portable than a eyboard with amplifier & speakers.

Is an 'eyboard'  1.25% more portable than a 'keyboard'  ;D ;D

sorry couldn't resist!

Theo,
I am most disappointed in you, an ex-schoolmaster, making such a basic error.
'Keyboard' has eight letters and 'eyboard' has seven. That makes a possible saving of twelve point five per cent, an error of a magnitude of ten. Would that could account for my Erika only having two and a half buttons on the right side and four fifths of a button on the bass?

My Erika is as old as me. Luckily, it is not as decrepit.

I would love to have seen the Sreb go down the same path as early synths .. in a sort of prog/folk/krautrock crossover.

A Melodetron?  ;D

I'm surprised my family haven't bought me one on the strength of the ability to play silently. That alone is surely a massive plus.

Is there an EXTERMINATE feature on it, or does the inside occupy more space than the outside ???

Well you can obviously fit more boxes and other instruments inside...so it must be trans-dymensional. ;)
