"I Saw Three Ships" paired with "St. Georges Day" is a good combo. Georges has nothing to do with Christmas, but the start of the A music is the same. The Sussex session classic is Heel and Toe polka with the C music replaced with Jingle Bells.

And Deck the Halls/Princess Royal (sound similar again)!

"The Chestnut" is also worth a look as it sounds uncannily like Rest Ye Merry Gents.

How about as LJC says below recording pairings of christmas tunes with 'traditional' tunes for the December tune of the month? Couple of other suggestions:

I saw three ships / the new rigged ship

and

God rest you merry gentleman / Rochdale coconut dance

In the Bleak Midwinter - the only carol worth the bother (in my opinion).
Defintely a favourite. But which tune? - I know at least two which are sung widely.

Or for a bit of kitch - Little Drummer Boy
Sorry, it would bring back too many memories of Cliff Richard.

I'd prefer a winter theme rather than a christmas theme. ;)

I'm another "baa humbugger" wrt carols (working Xmas).  I think Lester's suggestion "in the bleak midwinter" might tick quite a lot of boxes, and also stop anyone "bleaking" that we've picked the wrong tune ;)

ITBM has more complexity than any of the shepherdy stuff, but not too much. It handles well in G. It digresses briefly into C at the start of it's 'B' part - just one F note which one rowers etc can fudge as an F#.  The C bit is a nice new trick, and IMHO rather lovely. Our 'standard box' has C chord both ways so it's doable :D

Don't see anyone else flocking to this cause yet, but that's my tup-pence  8)

You are very knowledgeable about how to play tunes, chords and all that theory stuff but do we assume you have no camera as we yet to see any performances??   >:E   ::)

I have been following this thread with interest.
I love carols and the music associated with Christmas and the Winter Solstice time of year. I used to sing in a choir many years ago, and this time of year always provided us with the richest music in so many ways. Some of my favourites were the very old tunes, some going back to the 14th or 15th century - e.g. Personent Hodie (Sing aloud on this day) is a German melody from 1360; In Ducli Jubilo is also from the 14th century. Carols remain popular with many people today and this familiarity is just about the only inkling that some people have of early music.

The other important point to note is that many carols tunes had their origins as dance music, and so are well suited to us here on this forum.
Just a couple of quotes from the preface of the Oxford Book of Carols which I think are relevant here:

1. Carol literature and music are rich in true folk-poetry and remain fresh and buoyant even when the subject is a grave one.
and
2. The word 'carol' has a dancing origin, and once meant to dance in a ring: it may go back through the old French 'caroler' and the Latin 'choraula', to the Greek 'choraules', a flute-player for chorus dancing....

So - forget the terrible plodding 19th century legacy of 'Good King Wenceslas', an example of Victorian doggerel (sorry Alison!) imposed on a delightful Springtime carol dance tune 'Tempus adest floridum' - which I think translates roughly as 'the time for flowers has come'; which needs to be played fast and with an insistent beat.

Here are some of my favourites as suggestions for Carol TOTM.

Angels from the Realms of Glory
Patapan
Personent Hodie
Sans Day Carol (St Day Carol - Cornish Trad.)

Remember - these are dance tunes.

While I don't like to mix beef and mutton in one thread, I acknowldge the 'bull' issue you allude to. Camera been experimented this week and seems to produce some form of macromedia file. Should work. No excuses.  "C"

Steve - they still have dances called horo in macedonia. Bert Lloyd's book said the greek 'X' (chi) had evolved to an H there, but a C here. "X"

As we seem to have decided to have a theme and a tune of the month, why don't we make the tune "normal" so to speak?

I think we'll leave that to the poll and let the strongest tune win. My guess is a non-carol would win, but I'd never have guessed last month's result! We could probably do with more non-carol nominations...

Cheers,
Clive

Rather than just one seasonal tune I'd like to suggest a Swedish Masquerade set, like this for example:

Slow march: Hark the Herald Angels Sing
Waltz: Away in a manger
Polka: Deck the Halls with boughs of Holly

Contributors could substitute their own preferred tunes.  That should give plenty of scope for creativity.
