This really gave me quite a laugh!

I guess the old Shand Morino is going toward the MTV-Awards!

Funniest thing I've heard in a long time.

Can't wait for "Prim Ho's Polka" and "Knees-up Motherf*****r"

What is a Polka?
« Reply #5 on: February 02, 2008, 01:57:16 AM »

But is it really a polka?I've just been playing "Balen i Karlstad" and the "Sunshine Schottische" and they have the same rythym and key changes.

This really gave me quite a laugh!

Yeah, and (aside from the "jokey" aspect of it) the technical feat of getting the mix so in synch and aligned is pretty amazing, too!  (Of course, I'm about as ignunt of sound mixing as I am most things so maybe it's easy but it sounds good to me.)

 >:( I must be the only person not impressed.  The mix is appalling and as you can get computer software to match beats for you, I think this is just a poorly produced joke.

Yes I am from Yorkshire.

Just played it to my wife who loved it - so it is only me that doesn't "get it"

I think it's funny because of the two "extremes" that have been mixed on the same tune. How much more apart can Jimmy Shand and a rapper be?!? Proof that music can unite people :)

exept that they were not both there at the same time and that the rightful owner of the  record cover  had not granted permission for it to be so used.  Jimmy Shand, as an ex coal miner  had an exellent command of expletives,
I like to think of him mouthing such words from above whilst sitting on a cloud playing his box.  I agree with Peter & Ollie its crap.

Hmmm.

If Jimmy Shand was alive today, he'd be turning in his grave.... :o :o :o

Am I missing something here? I thought it was all a joke. I wasn't particularly bothered about the slight inconsistency of sychronisation or whether it was truly a polka - or if it was truly a rap for that matter.
I just saw it as a bit of postmodern ironic iconoclasm poking just as much fun at the oh so serious 50 Cent as "besmirching" the memory of the sainted Jimmy Shand.

I cringe as much as the next person when I see people taking the piss out of morris dance or trad music but, come on, surely this is just someone mucking about to raise a laugh for fans of both Jimmy and 50 (although I applaud the brain which came up with the combination) not to cruelly mock either of them.

And maybe, just maybe, if Jimmy was alive today he might also have a laugh.

I'm wearing protective headgear so you may now begin to throw things.

I'm afraid you are. I have held off commenting on this before now because I could not guarantee a response even approaching temperate. I consider the item pointed out by the original poster extremely offensive. At a time when the whole of Scotland is celebrating 100 years of Jimmy Shand (born 28 January 1908) with radio and TV programmes and commemorative accordion events, I doubt the timing of this tasteless rubbish is coincidental.

I am saddened that anyone could find this item even mildly amusing. I doubt whether any of you foreigners have any idea of the respect that Scots have for Jimmy Shand. Your humour is misplaced and resented.

It's a pity that there are no famous Danes to be parodied; just one fairly well-known one. But who could get a laugh out of quantum physics?

I just got it in a email, and thought I'd pass this on, to keep this both a forum of technical and non-technical sharing. It was just something I got a laugh out of, and I thought I'd share it. I am just sorry that wgwy could not see it as that, and nothing more.

The whole of Scotland, Bill?  I recently drove through Auchtermuchty (twice in fact) and couldn't even be bothered going to see his shrine, sorry, statue. Anyway, if it wasn't for the Vikings...

Wow!!I didn't think this clip would cause so much rancour.

As an accordion player with Danish and Scottish anscestry may I say that I found the clip to be not disrespectful of Jimmy Shand in any way and also very entertaining. Most youtube commentators loved the clip for the way the vocals meshed so well with the tune, not only for the laugh they got out of it.

The added bonus is that I've started learningthe Bluebell Polka off of this clip.

As far as I know the Danes still enjoy having a laugh at the peculiarities of their culture and I always thought the Scots did too.

I'm sat here mouth agape wondering whether this is still a wind-up. Are you suggesting that I'm somehow racist to have a smile at this? Or are you possibly showing your own colours by taking offense at the black cultural imposition?

No, no - you're winding me up surely. Sheesh - it's a joke. Thank goodness for that.

I don't know how you can infer racism from anything I said. It's the disrespect that annoys me.

Sad, Jim. How could you pass up such an opportunity twice? As for the Vikings, remember 1263!
