Pearloid.
« on: October 19, 2009, 02:08:30 PM »

In a thread in Instrument makes and models mention is made of '...a thin plywood cabinet with a single layer of hard celluloid...'.  Is the celluloid the same stuff as pearloid, and how is/was it applied?  The pattern appears to go  seamlessly round corners, is it sprayed on? Could it be applied DIY style, say for a self-build project? There's a lot of it still about - new Paolos etc.

You can buy sheets of celluloid from Charlie Marshall at CGM. Its weird stuff, bit like book covering - only worse!

To apply it you soak it in a mixture of acetone and water so it changes (temporarily) from rigid to soft and stretchy.  Its then stretched round the surface of the woodwork and allowed to dry out, then polished.  Quite a skilled job with plenty of opportunity for making a mess - and acetone requires very careful handling, its just about the most inflammable solvent in common use.

There is a brief glimpse of the job in this You tube, about 52 secs. in :

Good ventilation and/or breathing apparatus would be good too as it (acetone) is tremendously volatile - you would end up on the ceiling.

Only 5 or 10 minutes to 'skin' one side of an instrument. Doesn't say how long to dry or when to start scraping to level it off. IF I ever get round to starting a self-build I would like to have this sort of finish. I'm guessing from the lack of responses citing actual experience that no-one here has tried this for themselves. Could be a costly mistake.

In both the videos showing pearloid being applied, something is brushed onto the wood first - any ideas as to what this might be anyone?

See how close those fingers go to the unguarded tablesaw blade at 30 sec, and the spindle moulder a few seconds later ...

In both videos it looks as if it is being handled with bare hands - exposure of skin to acetone on a regular basis will lead to all sorts of problems.  Also, didn't look like a lot of ventilation available, so some serious issues there.  They obviously don't have UK Health and Safety inspector!!
