Morris Tunes
« on: November 19, 2009, 04:23:49 PM »

I thought it'd be cool to learn some Morris stuff. Is there a collection somewhere on the web with Morris tunes? Any format works: abc, notation in pdf/gif, midi, mp3....

Modesty prevents me posting this link (well almost)  Lester's Morris MP3s

For ABCs go HERE or HERE, the second HERE is to the Morriss Ring's ABCs which tend to be in the collected key which is a pain!

Susi, Susi...you're cool enough already ;D
Sadly Lester has beaten me to it - as I was going to point you in his direction. I too learnt to play most of the morris tunes i know from Lester's website. Best of luck!

Cool. But I thought you were going to San Francisco? I think I have stress induced confusion. I know you said you had been there already, but still I thought you were going away somewhere soon... maybe because you couldn't be at the practice with spelmanslaget?

After last Sunday's practice, I hope you will be dancing while playing   (:)

Cool, both sound like fun. Is the Mellerud thing the same as your spelmanslag practice? I actually downloaded some tunes from the website, to learn when I have time. I hope it will happen before I move from this area!

I learned all of mine from my Grandfather's black book, in which he transposed all of the tunes into G and D ;D

Check out the CD on William Kimber ( pub English Folk Dance and Song Society), he played on Anglo concertina for Headington Quarry Morris  and is one of the earliest morris musicians recorded. That will give you an authentic feel.

Morris On  and Son of Morris On were very influential records in the 70s and John Kirkpatrick is a great player and devotee of Morris.  Yo can't go far wrong with his music. ' He's the Daddy' as far as i'm concernned and he loves Hohners!

There is a book of dots to accompany the Kimber CD, if you are interested in exploring his distinctive style.
I have Kimber playing Double Lead Through as a ring tone - always provokes a discussion if it starts during a meeting!!

IMHO the definitive John K morris album from the 70's is 'Plain Capers', and I believe its still available on CD, perhaps even on iTunes!
All cotswold tunes played on concertina or melodeon, without the folk/rock elementa of Morris On.

I forgot to mention Dan Worrall's book on Kimber's playing It's published by EFDSS.
