Ladies and Gentlemen, my version of Princess Royal, played in A minor on a D/G Castagnari Mory with... oh yes, unisonoric basses!

I'm going to call this a 'concert' version - i.e. it's not true to *any* morris traditions, has extra bars here and there (quite randomly), and... no slows. It's based most heavily on a fiddle version Chris Wood plays at his concerts sometimes - a magical interpretation of the tune. There is a video of him playing it on youtube if you're interested (not uploaded by me) - look for 'chris wood' and 'princess royal' and you should find it.

Oh, and it's my first try at using iMovie and GarageBand together - that lets me do nice things like add a bit of reverb which as far as I can figure out, I can't do in iMovie 09 directly (you can in '06 I gather!). Recorded on iMovie for video and GarageBand for sound at the same time; then replace the iMovie soundtrack with the GarageBand version - a lot easier to synchronise them than I thought it would be. The editing's is in general a little shaky - I find both GarageBand and iMovie incredibly restrictive in what they do and after a while I just went... oh sod it, upload.

Enjoy,

Clive

Ok, here is a Q&D video of the tune the way I normally play it (except the mistakes, which are, unfortunately still normal, but definitely not intentional!).

Really like the ''Spiersesque" (from Bellow?) RH arpeggios. I can do this a bit on the anglo but have no idea on melodeon - so hey! Another development opportunity  (:)

Enjoy,

Clive

I did! Very moody & beautiful and I want to be a drone! Unless I can persuade Mr Scally to learn the pipes or hurdy gurdy - it's yet another development opportunity. And probably bring on MAD. Any suggestions for a simple tune for getting a drone effect with D/G 2-row? I guess you're limited to C and D?

Okay, that's it. I have to stop watching these tunes for a while. I'm getting far too excited by the variations already, especially Clive's.
My experiment this month will be to post the tune how I normally play it at our session, and then watch the incoming posts, be totally inspired (or is that inspiered  (:)) and come up with something completely different. My son's off school sick, the dog's misbehaving, I have Christmas to sort out and I'm looking for the video camera. (BAD MUM  :|bl)

Cheers

Thanks! Yep, on a D/G 2 row you're pretty much limited to C and D drones (D requiring switching buttons on pull and push of course). However, a C drone can be used very effectively against a tune in G sometimes (e.g. what Andy Cutting does to the Beggars Reel), so it might work against a major key version of Princess Royal in G...

On this particular 12 bass however, I've customised the basses... and have available drones in G, D, C and A. Heh heh! There's a keyboard layout on the main website for the interested...

Cheers,

Clive

Princess Royal multitracked on two Hohners
« Reply #47 on: December 04, 2009, 11:17:54 AM »

Thanks everyone for the nice comments on my first upload.

Here's my second attempt at this tune.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMXURw0Py3c
This time two multitracked melodeons - a Hohner Pokerwork in D/G and a Hohner 1-row 4-stop in G which has a great growly sound well suited to the tune, I think.

Thanks also to Sarah LDT for her tips for exporting videos from iMovie.  (:)

Oh Steve, that is the business.

I know that some people on this forum will not agree, but for me, the sound of you pulling the C chord on the Pokerwork against the D chord on the one-row is music to my ears.
English melodeon playing at its funkiest and best.  :||: :||:

Sandy, thank you - that was lovely. So full of life! It had me dancing around as I was listening to it.
Good chords, and I particularly liked the way you used sudden stops - the silences - in the music.

I missed your dog this time, though.....

I've aquired a Hohner Echo IV so thought I'd give totm a go on it.

Never played this tune before today, spent the morning trying different keys & arrangements, decided on Gm.

Wow. That was amazing - there's a sort of medieval feel to it.
