Here's a late late late entry. Filmed in the gloaming of a wet Lake District May night, hence the grainy pic!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyVFB-ANKN4

That's great! It's so different to hear it in Bmin, and fwiw, I like it a lot.
Smooth, effective runs coupled with syncopated / swing into the new phrase ... lovely control.
One thought / question - I wonder what the effect would be if you played them in the opposite order? I was enjoying the Bmin version, and when it modulated to Gmaj that suddenly felt "safe & familiar" and therefore less exciting. Not the playing, you understand, just the piece.
I clicked back to the start of the Bmin version after the first time through of Gmaj and I think that works too.
Overall, great playing - rhythmic and controlled. Thanks.

Okay sensible question. If you've got the major version what do you actually do playing wise to make it a minor version?

I think you're right Zubz - major/minor would probably be better. To come clean, the reason it's that way round is that I thought I was quite likely to 'lose it' playing in Bm so it was less to go back over to re-record. A less dodgy reason is that G to Bm is a bit odd - the ear 'expects' to hear Em.

Sometimes it's good to not pander to what the ear 'expects' - keep 'em on their toes, I say!
Unless it just causes frustration, of course. If I've heard the story correctly, apparently in his youthful days Beethoven's parents used to get him out of bed by simply playing just the first 7 notes of a major scale - he couldn't lie there with the octave unresolved so he had to get up! (Probably apocryphal, but I like the story anyway  (:) )

Okay sensible question. If you've got the major version what do you actually do playing wise to make it a minor version?
Sensible but not that easy to give a comprehensible answer. Each major key has a relative minor - i.e. the same sharps/flats but starting on a different note. Bminor is the relative minor to D - i.e the scale starts on B and has an F# and C#. Not sure if that's what you mean. In terms of playing the relevant buttons - it would sound better in Eminor but I would either run out of high end notes or low end ones depending which octave I started in. Also playing wise - there's not too much in common finger wise when one plays a minor version of a tune c/w the major version, imho. I've no doubt, and am hoping, that more expert players and musicians on here will explain this all in much clearer terms if you'd like. Mcg :Ph

I was hoping it would be something easy like use same fingering but start a button below what you usually would.

I can't see an alternative to either learning that bit of theory and learning the note names, or learning what the differences sound like and then playing by ear & experimentation.

There's also the approach that's just "muck about with notes, see what sounds good / different / interesting and then take it from there". Your idea of starting on the next button down is a good place to start, and then build, letting your ears guide you ....

LtD - find the dots to the minor version and learn it. They're quite different tunes in places.

Try http://www.folktunefinder.com

Most of the minor versions there are in D minor or G minor so there's still some transposing to do if you're playing a D/G melodeon.
Also there isn't just one minor tune - there are lots of collected "Princess Royal" tunes from different morris traditions.
And search for "Miss MacDermott" - That's O'Carolan's name for the same tune. I just tried, and came up with This which is in E minor, for example, but not very melodeon friendly.

The Adderbury tune works on a standard D/G box and is particularly nice,  as is the dance that goes with it - I have a vivid memory of playing it for Hammersmith dancing as a 12-man set.

As a former member of Hammersmith (no mention of Smiffs in those days), I can only deplore the decline in standards among the youth of today!  ::)

My friend (Hugh Taylor of this parish) pointed out that if you pull instead of push you tend to end up with A minor on the G row and E minor on the D row (adjust as appropriate for F/C boxes etc.). But I must admit that this just makes my head hurt! I'd rather just learn the tune. I think he finds it a bit weird when I play stuff in Bm too rather than what he considers would be easier i.e. Am or Em.
