Theme of the Month for December 2009 - It's Christmas!
« on: December 01, 2009, 01:10:51 AM »

For one month only (probably!), we have a theme of the month as well as a tune of the month. Please post videos/sound clips of yourselves playing any carols, christmas no.1, or any other similar winter themed music in this thread.

There's so many possibilities that fit on a melodeon:

- God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
- In the Bleak Midwinter
- Good King Wenceslas
- Jingle Bells

... and many, many, more. Let's see what we can do!

One request though - if you want to post a theme-of-the-month video, consider having a go at the tune of the month (Princess Royal) as well while you've got the camera out!

Ho ho ho!

A little quiet in here isn't it?  :D

Here's a couple of Christmas tunes to start proceedings...

In Dulci Jubilo / On Christmas Night played on a nice old Hohner Club in C/F.

Ho ho ho!

Last Sunday, I heard this tune on Youtube and just had to learn it.  So, I took a break from Princess Royal, as the second part of the tune is giving me some trouble, and decided to work on this Christmas lullaby instead.  It's also my first attempt at singing while playing the accordion...right hand only for this one.  And now back to Princess Royal...

.......

Can I go back to being a grumpy Mr Scrooge now, and forget all about Christmas for another year?

Bah!!

Humbug!!

Three traditional dance tunes:

Branle de l'Official - 14th C French
Nos Galan - 16th C Welsh
Tempus Adest Floridum - 13th C Swedish/Finnish

Edit after steve_freereeder pointed out I had the tunes in the wrong order

Lester that was lovely, didn't realise that the Brits had nicked these tunes.
Any chance of the ABCs?

God stuff, Lester. It's especially nice to hear Wenceslas played as a proper speed dance tune.
Just to ward off any misunderstanding, Nos Galan (Deck the halls with buffs of holly, etc) is the second tune in your sequence, not Bransle de l'Official, which you play first.

Got it from St John Kirkpatrick's playing on his CD Wassail

Fantastic set Lester, although I was just about to record something very similar myself! (In fact, our versions of Princess Royal are scarily similar...). I used all three of those tunes to play of the Bampton sidestep yesterday.

This is my contribution to the Christmas theme. These are two tunes used by the Sompting Mummers, they sing the Sussex Carol, then do a dance to the second tune. I don't know what it's called. Played on my Liliput. This is straight off the camera, no editing. I don't know where the background hiss comes from.

Edit: This box has had an external and reed refurbishment, but no retuning, so it is still in the original A=435 tuning.

The second tune is a version of The Holly and the Ivy. Very well played indeed, I really enjoyed that, you added great bounce to the tune. Lovely little box too, sounds great!  (:)
