Zampogna: The Soul of Southern Italy

I realize that this is a melodeon forum, but I figure a lot of you guys are interested in european folk music in general.  In addition to playing the Italian organetto, I also play the Zampogna.  I have been working for the past 2.5 years on this documentary about Italian folk music.  It has several songs with organetto in it.  But it's mainly about the zampogna.  I am submitting it to film festivals and looking for a distributor.  In the meantime, here is the trailer:

I saw this lot in st Chartier - I think about 06'. Great noise on the 'grande scene' but somehow better playing in little groups under the trees.  For some reason I had them in N Italy in my head. Good to be put right. Found this article on Wiki - looks well informed (but don't they all)?

Actually Organettisto's posts here http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php?action=profile;u=1058;sa=showPosts have been a mine of useful info on Italian folks scene generally and I've just enjoyed looking back through them. Incidentally - Calabria doesn't look the safest place to be a goat - does it  >:E

I found a very enjoyable intro to Sicillian traditional music on this cd http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/sicilia-canto-nuovo/id140769523 - also available on other world music sites.

Pretty much nowhere in Southern Italy is a safe place to be a goat!

The wikipeida article is so-so. I have done a bit of correcting and additions to it. I've thought about doing an overhaul to it, but I wouldn't know where to stop.  Eventually someday I'd like to write a book on Italian folk music, or at least the zampogna.  There is hardly ANY information on this music in the english language.  -which i find extremely unusual considering the amount of Italian Americans.  I think i have said this before, but there are only a handful of Organetto players in the US and Italian is like the 5th or 7th largest ethnic group represented in the US.   And I'll be the first to say that the organetto is NOT difficult to play - at least compared to other instruments.

Scallyanglo - that CD you linked to has a guy on it that is in my film and you can see him in the trailer.  Hes the piper you see right before the guy sharpens the big knife - Giancarlo Parisi.  He plays a "prototype" instrument that he has put keys on so that the pipe can play a chromatic scale.  If you look closely at the video you can see the keys.  He is a very good piper and musician.

Wow I thought the GHB was an armload that Bagpipe is about the biggest I have ever seen!  Can't imagine the amount of air it takes to keep it going.  Bravo!

Oh - that's really interesting. I love Giancarlo's tracks on the CD - I hope the film gets a good showing and I can track it down.

Thanks.  I hope I get in some film festivals and get a distributor :)  I'll keep everyone posted on its status.  Until then you'll just have to keep re-watching the trailer :)

An update:  My documentary film, Zampogna: The Soul of Southern Italy, premiered at the Kansas City Film Fest last weekend with two sold out screenings.  If you haven't seen the trailer of the film yet, check out the link in the original post.  I'm still working to get the film in other festivals as well as some sort of distribution.

I have quite a bit of "behind the scenes" footage from filming my documentary. I have uploaded a few youtube videos of some of the music that didn't make it into my film. I have quite a bit more where this came from and in time plan on eventually putting most of it up on youtube. Here are some of the videos I recently uploaded. Stay tuned for more great tunes! All the clips are available to watch in High Definition (720 resolution).

In Catanzaro:

Principe playing a solo on an "a chiave" zampogna (Southern Calabrian design) in the key of MI:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTanWafkj0Q

Principe playing organetto and singing. They told me that this organetto was over 100 years old. Still sounds and plays great. I love this clip and regretted not being able to put it in the film:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omFlshHtlM0

Chiarella Domenico on the organetto with percussion accompaniment. This guy is really good at the 4 bass organetto. After seeing him play I decided I had to get one of these. Well, I've been playing it for a year and starting to get pretty good.

Filmed at Scapoli:
Leonardo Carpito on the Sicilian ciaramedda. This guy also makes pipes and made both the pipe he is playing and the one on the guy's shoulder in the background that has been elaborately painted. This is a great tarantella executed quite well by the maestro Carpito.

Filmed in San Gregorio Magno:
This recording isn't really that great, I just love the part when the ciaramella player screws up and leaves the scene and the two zampognari start playing together. San Gregorio Magno is the little town my grandfather's family came from in the province of Campania. It's where I purchased my 4 palmi "a chiave" pipe.

Here is a Q&A I did after the second screening of my film at the Kansas City Film Fest.  Mainly a discussion of the state of Southern Italian folk music:

Ok, the youtube links should be fixed in the post above.  Sorry about that.

I'm still at the tip of the iceberg regarding distribution of the film.  This is my first film so it's a huge learning process.  Eventually I would like to have it on DVD or available in some sort of web viewable format as well as netflix.  I'm still trying to get into film festivals.  I need to look into applying to more international fests, including some in the UK.  I will update this thread with any information regarding international film festivals or ways to purchase or view the film.

Thanks for your interest!

Paul, I don't know where Tonawanda is, but the film will be playing in NYC at the John D. Calandra institute on Sept. 29th.  They haven't posted the listing yet on their website, but when they do I'll add it to this thread.   Thanks for the interest :)
