Replacing a bass spring - Pokerwork
« on: January 14, 2010, 05:33:23 PM »

The bass spring on my D/A bass button decided to snap a few days ago. Now, thanks to Dave Jolly, I have a replacement spring, but am unsure how to fit it. Dad seems to think that he can simply pull out the rod that holds the springs, slip the new one on, and then push the rod back into place again. Is it as simple as this, or is the above a very dangerous thing to do? I need to have this fixed by tonight, so speedy replies would be very useful.  (:)

Without having had a chance to look inside my Pokerwork before replying to check - yes your Dad is right. But before you try to remove the axle rod, unhook the existing springs first, then slide the rod out just far enough for you to replace the new spring. Then reposition the rod and re-hook the springs. A tip I got from Theo: when removing the axle rod, if you can follow it along with a stiff piece of wire threading it through the existing springs, it helps keep everything in place.

Hope this makes sense.

Good advice from Steve.  You might be lucky with this, if it is not one of the springs nearest to the centre where there might not be room to pull the rod far enough before it hits the inside of the casing.  If this is the case then you should release all the springs on both rods before removing the 3 or 4 screws that hold the mechanism in place.  This will give you a little more room in which to move the axle rod.  If that is still not enough then you need to remove the buttons from their rods before lifting the mechanism out of the instrument.   Removing the buttons can be quite difficult to do without causing damage, because the buttons are a push fit and can be very tight.  Putting the buttons back care is needed to avoid bending the rods the buttons are attached to.

Its not a job to do in a rush.   For tonight you might be better to do a temporary repair with an elastic band.

It was for the morning, but dried up in the afternoon. Everything was running an hour late though because the council forgot to close the roads.  ::)

Ahh, but which do you mean? Straw Beer or Straw Bear?  :P Sampled a good amount of both over the weekend; both very nice.

Theo - would this stiff wire threading trick also work for a small accordion with keys when pulling the axle?

I imagine it would, but you may have to drill a hole at the far end of the keyboard to let the wire get to the axle rod hole.
