Orange in Bloom is a wonderful song. After listening to all of the existing versions, watching the dancers, the very vitality of it wore me out. I decided that the tune became lovelier when I played it slower, to my ears anyway, so here's my go, as a lullaby or slow air:

Beautiful! I love the chords (is that what they are?) with the right hand, it makes the sound very rich. Great box too (:)

Two lovely versions from JWF and ziachmusi. The former has a gentle haunting feel to it and the box looks and sounds great. The latter sounds jaunty yet restrained and I like the cartoon. Well done to both of you.

Another fairly early try. Plenty of room for improvement. This time with my Mandolin Man and a Bavarian Plattler!. When it comes to silly dancers the Bavarians can hold their own :M. When I get lost I sort of slip in to drone mode. Hopefully a better version towards the end of the month.

enjoy!

I did!! ;D

It's very easy to see the fingering 'cos of the speed and has inspired me to try it out in advance of Rees's RH Harmony workshop at M&M. What a great green!

Thank you, Juker...the first time thru, I just use the chords and then add the bass second time. You are right, this is a very sweet box, and the left side can be played smooth as butter, unlike my other boxes which are a bit abrupt and 'outspoken'.....cheers

Some of the fingering might be a bit twisty and non-trad for a fast version. Your audio clip sounds like you already have a great take on this tune, Scally.... :||:

Orange in Bloom
Sherborne Waltz

Very nice - I enjoyed both renditions of what you seem to see as seperate tunes (hmmm, I guess that's how tunes seperate)? A useful contrast

Er, I've taken the liberty of setting follow up to this post to the group videos.alt.spellings in view of the videos' header sections - and of course Lester's interest in the subject  ;)*

Sometimes even those 404 errors can be a type of kindness!   ;D

Seems to be a forum bug that wraps 'http://..' around something that already has it. I've hacked it straight. Ta.

[edit] just to report that the spelling of Sherbourne is now entirely uniform :M

Well here's my 4 button version.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4sywIQCPXU

On my self made "Box of Gold", Emmanuel Pariselle one row, 4 stops C tuning.

I'm waiting for Rees to finish re-tuning my two and half row G/C, EP that I built in Belgium last July. I hope he will put up a tune on here with it to let me know how it sounds. Of course when I get hold of it It won't sound like wot Rees does, but it would be nice to hear it. Ooops thread drift. :|bl But then I'm too old not to care. :|glug :|glug

Oooh Im' waiting for March then perhaps we can have a March. Like Centenary March with lots of buttons to push and Pull. I told you. I'm Old enough and I don't care. :|glug

They're coming thick and fast now. Nice variations from Chas and GbH.

I liked the double stopping in your Sherborne Waltz, Lester, although I was surprised at the speed of the kick capers in your Orange in Bloom. My side would collapse in a heap and need several ambulances if I played them at that speed. Your side must be much fitter than mine! Are your shirts an attempt to combat SAD?

Here's my first effort, as a waltz.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2Y97xlJHyI

I've known the tune for a long time, since I first started playing, but it's not one that I've had reason to play in a long time. Big apologies for the quality of the video (better to Minimise and have sound only!) - it was late before I got to record this, and I'm blaming the uselessness of energy-saving bulbs plus the hallway needs an extra lighting point when I ever get round to the rewire! (but the acoustics are much better IMO a bit further up the 'naughty steps' - where the once-open stairway is less enclosed, and takes more advantage of the ceiling height above).

Played in Bb on an Eb/Bb Hohner Club Modell I with de-clubbed treble end, but still with Club and bass (popular for singing with, I'm told) - hence tripping myself up as I try to remember to negotiate round this! (gives scope for a nice chord sequence, though, in avoidance of the 'push' bass). Aside from cleaning up the outside, this is how the box came to me from Germany, with no further internal refurbishment or tuning up to now. A bit clattery, I know, but basically OK apart from one 'growly' bass.

Will try to substitute a better video in future.

Diane

Edited as I've just realised, by having to finger my C/F box differently (which does have a de-clubbed treble but not bass, that this is in fact still clubbed on the treble. Just goes to show that I don't look at all - just feel around for what sounds right in playing! Much more tricky with clubbed treble, as involves a rather awkward row change.

A nice lilting quality to the waltz, Diane, and a good sound to the Hohner, even if it is a bit clacky.

Too many apologies! It was wonderful! Also, the buttons on the box look illuminated as does the Hohner emblem, your playing was great, and the Hohner sounds superb! Wow, BbEb sounds awesome BTW.
