The phrase "chickbox" certainly presents an interesting comment on the nature of the melodeon/accordion. I used to be an avid cyclist and often wound up in sports clinics for one injury or another. It amazed me that there were usually more musicians than athletes. The specific injuries were interesting but the usual answer was "if you play the violin you can't avoid this." You could do particular exercises to deal with the problem but the way of playing was as it was.
With the melodeon there are so many variations in terms of size. I play a small box and thus weight is not an issue. Also I play sitting down, Irish style, so the only real strength I need is in my left arm. I am a very large man--height not weight--but almost sixty with various beginnings of arthritis--a good part of which goes back to the cycling injuries--and I don't think I could handle something very heavy. I suppose the Cairdin mini could be a "chick box" but it certainly suits me.

OK  OK   I apologize

I'll just call it a "girly" box.

Is that better ?

Who are you calling "girly"? As an 18 stone married father of two of advanced age I kind of think I am not an archetypal "girly" but I do play a Tommy. I have never had air problems with it and have played it vigorously for both morris and in my band.

I am curious as to what "girly" or "chick box" really mean, other than the obvious, small and light? Which is by no means an accurate stereotype, I have seen millions of women strapped to wardrobes bigger than they are and I have seen strapping young with tiny little boxes. I would class myself in the latter bracket, I would really like a Lilliput or similar (:)

That's just reminded me of Lester's old avatar with him playing his Mignon that, with the absence of anything else for scale, could have been a photo of a giant playing a normal sized melodeon.  ;D

Just as Miatas and the New Age Mini is a "chic" car or a "girly" car..
so goes the Tommy

Where as the original Mini Cooper and Lotus Elan were not chickified ( I used to work on both )

I suggest that one might need to turn in your "man card" to buy or play a Tommy

I can't believe I'm reading some of these comments in 2010! Or are these just ironic and  I've undergone a "sense of humour" by-pass? Personally, I play a Tommy. And a Giordy. And a big, bulky 2.5 row....I use them for different things, and don't change gender or sexual preference each time I pick up a different instrument. At least I don't think I do(Sudden moment of self-doubt)...And as for switching between the uke and the double bass....now then I get real identity confusion....

Cheers,

I can't help but wonder what would happen if Tommy and Sara - you know, sort of got it together.

What so the Smallness of the Tommy, but the tone of the Sara? That would be cool. (I keep them in seperate rooms and the Sara stays in the box).

Trouble is that trying to pack a lot into a small case, like the Tommy, inevitably leads to some compromises, eg fewer, or smaller bass reeds, and simply having a lot of reeds packed into a small space can make a big difference to the sound.

I had a fairly newTommy for a while last year, and it had 3 bass reeds and 3 chord reeds, no shared reeds. I believe they changed the design of the bass end a couple of years or so ago.

I have looked into two Tommys which are 15 years apart in age and they both have 16 reed plates mounted on one block.

A new Hascy has 24 reed plates mounted on two blocks.

Now to the sums!!
Let  b  be the number of bass reeds and   c  the number of chord reeds.  For the Hascy,
   24 = 4b + 4c   where the '4's are the number of buttons.
Dividing by 4 gives,
   6 = b + c.
So if  b = 2 then c =4.

For the Tommy,
   16 = 4b + 4s + 4c   where   s is the shared reed.
So,
   4 = b + s + c.       b =1,   s =1 and c = 2.
The bass note is b+s and the chord is s+c.  A two note bass and three note chord from 4 reeds.

A Lilly I have looked in has a similar block to the Tommy but does not share a reed.   b = 1  and c = 3.

Any questions or must I post snaps?
(I apologise for the algebra)

Ah! have just listened more carefully to the Hascy basses and b=3 and c=3.  i.e. three octaves for the bass note.  No wonder it sounds rather good.

Correction to the Lilly comments.  I have looked harder at the Lilly and it is the same shared reed arrangement as the Tommy.  However some reeds are smaller and sound and octave up.  This made the two notes in the base hard to hear.

Oh go on then, I'll bite.

I think what melodeon's trying to articulate is that he's seen more women playing a Tommy than he's seen men play one. Would I be correct?

1. Having had the honour of meeting Lester, there is not even the merest hint of 'girlie'
2. I own a Tommy because it fitted my small hands and felt comfortable, and was the most responsive I could find at a very large festival in UK.
3. I have no idea about 'chick box', though have confessed to having heard of Lindford Christie's 'lunch box'....
4. I agree with Guy and am somewhat taken aback about designating boxes with sexist labels.....

Surely it's different boxes for different people/playing styles?
