Anyone got a better word than "notey?"
« on: February 10, 2010, 09:35:46 PM »

I've already used busy and I need a similar word to "notey" to describe Joe Derrane's playing in passing. I've discussed his articulation and so forth in detail, just need a quick word that isn't so un-academic.

SO! Anyone got one?

Bet you won't find 'notey' in the Thesaurus.... ;D

I know what you mean - sort of 'musically verbose' - but can't think of a snappy one off-hand (runs off to check Thesaurus for meaning of 'verbose'!).

Intricate?

Thesaurus gives definition of 'intricate' as 'elaborate' - which is certainly a word I've heard used in connection with musical styles.

'Elaborate' then gives 'ornamented', 'ornate', 'embellished', 'decorated'  - what about highly-decorated? I've heard that one before, too.

Emperor of Austria: "Too many notes, Mr Mozart!"
WAM: "Just enough, your Majesty."

Mr Derrane is not the first to be accused.  :-*

Hmm, intricate seems to be the closest. While "ornamented" and "elaborate" both apply, I was hoping to convey that it isn't the quantity of ornamentation but rather the execution of said ornamentation that gives Derrane's playing it's sound. He emphasizes and separates the grace notes in ornaments much more than most Irish-style players, every note is articulated more clearly making his playing "notey." Damn academic writing!!

Thanks for the ideas, if anyone has a bright spark write it down!

Luke.

When my dance band was looking for a name a year or so ago, I have to say we did consider: 'Notey-Rioty', as a front-runner.  (Rejected, slightly contrived.)

(Other rejected names included:  'Knees up Gordon Brown' (Too short-lived), 'Four Folkies and a Piano' (possibly ditto), and 'Bentankle' (too obscure for non-folkies or those under the age of 55.)  Has anyone else got any others, or is this a new thread?

No probs. As payment, what Joe Derrane recordings would you recommend as I'll have to admit now to having never knowingly heard his playing?

Hmm, depends whether you want old Derrane or new Derrane, as you probably have heard there's a 30-something year hiatus from diatonic accordion playing in there somewhere. "Irish Accordion" gives a nice picture of how he sounded as a young'un and there's some nice Kimmel-esque stuff on it. His new ones vary, the sound is useless on the Mapleshade recordings so avoid them, "The Tie that Binds" is good and has a mix of players on it, some complimenting his playing better than others, but I'd probably go for "Return to Inis Mor." It's just him and Carl Hession, the sound's good (except maybe a little too much reverb on the box), there's good selections of tunes both common and less common as well as one of Derrane's non-Irish compositions. Give it a listen if you get the chance, there's a good chance that you won't like it at first if you're used to Irish-style playing as it is today but after a while of listening you'll probably come to appreciate it on its own terms.

Luke.

If you want to know more about Joe Derrane, you have to set aside 30 minutes to watch this great TG4 program: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8983345018520645601#

Baroque, and musical arabesques come to mind for me. A profusion of notes, never  slurred. No "puddle of mush" as he puts it himself.

Yes to the TG4 that Steve posted. Great program and really captures the trajectory of Joe Derrane's life.
As to a CD my vote is Tie that Binds. My favourite tune is Caprice. I am sure some of you will find that too notey but I think it is absolutely wonderful
