That's interesting because I'm quite sure I find the other way round. I guess it's a matter of what you are used to.

I couldn't agree more and my stance on the issue has changed entirely since this discussion began. I've been playing tunes from folk collections for some time now, many of which have part bars at the beginning of both the A & B music, I believed this to be technically incorrect but I was wrong. Now I'm perfectly happy to read and write music in the (to me) simpler and less cluttered form. Nothing wrong with 1 & 2 endings though if that floats your boat.

Nothing wrong with 1 & 2 endings though if that floats your boat.

...and of course there are times when you need 1st and 2nd time bars, because the music really is different.

Yes indeed, I wrote this tune a few months for a project and the B part has quite long 1 & 2 endings. I got a right slamming for this one, more musical errors than you can shake a stick at and I was even told off for not giving it a proper name. It's not at all good but there are bits in the melody line I quite like.
