YAN (yet another newbie!)
« on: March 09, 2008, 07:28:53 PM »

Hello all, I've been lurking for a while, mostly because I didn't own or play a melodeon. I still can't play one but I've just bought an old clunker on ebay to find out if diatonics work for me before dipping my toes into the vastly more expensive pool of high quality instruments. The whole push/pull thing will be quite a challenge for me as I normally play English concertina (does that constitute swearing around here?).

Actually the 'old clunker' is a Hohner and it looks to me like an older Erica with a muted blue pearl finish, might be quite a nice little box once it's been fettled a bit.

I'll be watching for the postman!

Pete.

Edited due to a typo, I'm good at those!

Hello Pete,

Welcome to the dark side. Melodeons are fantastic! Not as fantastic as concertinas but still fantastic! I hope to see this new box very soon!

all the best,

Well I'll probably see you on Wednesday but I doubt I'll have the box by then and it's pretty certain that it'll be a while before anything resembling a tune comes out of it unless it's played by you!  ::)

Think they are but in different ways. From a fellow English and Melodeon basher.

That comes across as a very negative comment.  Would you care to elaborate?  There are other fantastic instruments around like concertinas, fiddles and more.  People all have their own preferences for instruments and should be able to express those preferences.  How dull would the world of music be if melodeons were the only instruments.  No orchestras, no brass bands, no bluegrass, no jazz piano they are all fantastic.

Lets keep it positive please :)

Reminds me of a Gary Larson cartoon, where people entering heavens are given a harp, and those entering hell receive an accordion!

:-[Don't worry, I have the same problem. Probably due to communication problems on the internet. It's just not the same thing discussing a topic in real life and discussing it on the internet.
By the way, good luck with the box! May I ask what maker it is?
