Melodeon Recordings on Spotify
« on: March 19, 2010, 10:20:35 AM »

Yves Lambert has his own band now, his CD "Le Monde Lambert" is fantastic.

Oh my goodness - Yves Lambert's Bal a l'huile is on Spotify! I do wonder what other melodeon-featuring gems are hidden in there...

Markku Lepisto's 'Polku' is there too... and ... only just noticed, so is 'Silta'! And Lepisto&Lehti's 'Helsinki'!

Anybody 'spotted' any other gems?

Cheers,

Clive

... and, count 'em, *4* Marc Perrone albums (but not La Forcelle or Cinema Memoire unfortunately), Ricardo Tesi, Kepa Junkera...

... 6 John Kirkpatrick albums...

... Panic at the Cafe from Nigel Eaton/Andy Cutting...

... not sure if these are all licenced for non-UK users though; I believe Spotify has some albums only licenced for particular countries. Try 'em and see!

Coo, thanks for this - expanded my Spotify lists no end, up to now I've used it to listen to those 60s bands that I remember but do not have CDs (Jefferson Airplane, etc).

Incidentally there's a lots of Steeleye and some Maddy Prior, also Incredible String Band (an old favourite).

Not enough time to catch it all...

oooh....oooh...oooh.... and from Germany, Ulman! If you haven't heard their first album, 'Acoustic Power', it's fantastic. Very much in the Blowzabella style, and Johannes Ulman is one of the best box players I've ever heard. Their second album hasn't grabbed me quite as much; your mileage may vary of course.

Stuff wot I've found:

Trip to Harrogate - tunes from the Joshua Jackson MS
Lau - three albums worth!
Boozoo Chavis - great cajun
Joe Falcone - more cajun
Mardi Gras, Vintage Cajun Sons - speaks for its self!
Ed Rennie - Narrative
Bask - a really good Swedish band (no melodeon, but definitely worth a listen)
Joe Derrane - They have his latest album aged 70 and the 1991 re issue of his first album recorded when he was 17. A goodun.
Loads of Marin Simpson

and more, but a cup of tea is calling meee....

Met Johannes at 15 - fantastic. They whole familiy had driven from E Germany in a little Trabant (with full kit camping gear, 2 accordions ..)  Now that the boys are grown (and perhaps less maternally influenced) they are doing some quite wacky stuff. I'll see if I can find the youtube ref - but it's no longer folk.

I really enjoyed that clip, right up to the point when the (very talented) drummer came over all unnecessary.  :|glug

I didn't really engage this thead above so apologies for slight drift. Google quickly found the website and although 'invitation' is still there they also have daily and 10 monthly rates. Have to say I'm tempted. Has anyone else taken the plunge?  Does it work off your own main PC?

Yep, I've signed up this month. Not sure I'll keep it long term as I have had the free account for a while, but I'll probably be tempted come renewal time. It works and sounds great on my PC and Iphone (over wifi), though I do have a fast broadband connection - I can't predict how it would work over a slower connection.

I'm also a big fan of emusic too - a great selection of non-mainlabel (i.e. the sort of stuff we like!) available as mp3 downloads.

I signed up to Spotify when it was first released, but for some reason it wouldn't work for me.  I was a bit sceptical about it and couldn't be bothered trying to sort it out.  Now it's become well established, and this thread prompted me to try again - I still had the original installation file.  It prompted me to download the latest version and now it's working.

I'm just starting to explore it, and there seems to be some good stuff.  I'm listening to the Goldberg Variations as I write - it's OK, but what it really needs is a melodeon  (:)

Some Julian Sutton goodness...

Auvo Quartet
Fabrice Besson/Julian Sutton - Deux Terres
... various Kathryn Tickell band albums

The disc with Fabrice Besson in particular seems particularly interesting...

There's loads of Albion Band and Ashley Hutchings music on there. Also Magpie Lane and plenty of Morris tunes, including the concertina playing of William Kimber.

Try Swedish band Filska. I'm listening to "Bethany's Waltz" right now, but have the feeling it's too delicate for me to attempt on the melodeon. Frifrot is another good band if you're in a particularly Swedish kind of mood, or check out Ale Moller for some great fiddle playing.

One tune that can work on melodeon is the lovely Josefin's Waltz. Dervish have a good version of this on Spotify. People round here seem to play it in F, which is probably a mean trick to exclude melodeons, but it's also played in other keys.
