Poll: Tune of the Month for April 2010
« on: March 24, 2010, 11:08:05 PM »

Off we go again folks - please vote away, but please, please keep posting your TOTM and ThemeOTM contributions for this month!

Next month's Theme of the Month is... secret for now! I don't want to detract from the current theme. But there will be one...

Cheers,

Clive

This was the disaster last time I attempted to play cock of the north (the only folk tune I've ever had a non folkie recognize).

Vote for it so I can get a chance to 'improve' and get ideas from other players. I'd be intrested to see how this well known tune can be manipulated to bring something fresh and different to the table.

Hmmm. Winster Gallop is lagging behind, isn't it? Here's a recording Ian and I made 2 nights ago (we're practising for an upcoming wedding barndance), and apart from us playing 3xA's and 2xB's (we're using it for a 40 bar dance) this is a reasonably straight take on the tune if you haven't heard it before. I think it's a cracker of a tune.

In a cynical attempt to get more votes, the video features a photo of 2 very cute puppies. If you don't like the tune, vote for the puppies! ;D

Has anyone posted ABC or score for Liberty Bell, in "melodeon friendly" arrangement?   Sorry if its been posted and I've just missed it.   Great tune for the Gay Gordons by the way.

That's the trouble with Liberty Bell. It's not particularly melodeon friendly - at least it not on a 2-row 8-bass box with standard accidentals, not without making (to my mind) severe compromises and alterations to the tune, which is rather a shame, because the original Sousa march is an absolute cracker. I'm sure that others who already play this will disagree, but the versions I've heard leave so much out that it's one of those few pieces that I'd rather not attempt on a melodeon.  :-\  It's probably much more suited to a 2.5 or 3-row box with 12 basses.

Now - on an anglo concertina, well that's a different matter. It goes beautifully!  (:)

I will post my 2 row 8 bass friendly (possibly over modified Steve (:)) version before the night is out. Need to check what I already have for sense before posting.

Sorry Steve   ;)
No apologies needed!

Well - it sort of works, though it leaves out lots of the A#s, and the trio (the C music) ought to go into the key of C, if you start off in G. But - never mind. If this wins the vote for TOTM I shall be interested to see what folks make of it.

This is certainly an instance where an original, composed, piece of music has found its way into the popular aural tradition and has evolved and become modified as a result. As most tunes were 'med up' by someone at one time or another, it is interesting to speculate what the original versions of say, Winster Gallop or Speed the Plough were like, and whether the original composers would recognise them from the way we play them today!  ;D

Incidentally, there's a definite typo in your ABC. I've corrected it in red.  ;)

Hmm....  I did think that Steve pursed his lips a little when he heard me play Liberty Bell.
Anyway, I am not sure that I agree that it doesn't fit comfortably on the melodeon.
Come on chaps, vote vote vote.

I might put a video on there to show that you don't need your chin to change the stops  :D

Love this tune, it is quite popular at the Bell folk club in Adderbury.

Cheers
