'I have written dances to the likes of Barwick Green (the Archer's theme to the uninitiated)'

Do you have  ABC's for this tune or is it within copyright, if so where can I find them?

Dave

For "an everyday story of country folk" death and destruction, Ambridge doesn't sound such a rustic idyll.

Maybe people could choose which tune they wanted to do for the month.

what do we do if it's a draw?

... then we'll have to learn "North of the Somme" I guess.

Much better than the alternative!   :|bl

A draw is a legitimate result - isn't it? I can't vote any nearer the close so will vote now for what its worth, and I will make a big effort to post this time round.

No, not in this case I think - more than one winner splits efforts across more than one tune which defeats the purpose of TOTM a little. Besides, the other tune will almost certainly win the following month, so both tunes will get their turn eventually.

I agree with the first point - that's one of the many real benefits of TOTM.
As for the 2nd point - well, we'll have to see I guess ... there are plenty of strong cases for other options too!  ;)

A couple of items about "Battle of the Somme" which I hope will be of interest:

Any score I've seen for "The Battle of the Somme", even in pipe books, hasn't attributed the composer. After a bit of a search, I found this: "Composed shortly after the infamous battle by Pipe Major William Lawrie of the 8th Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, The Battle Of The Somme was commonly regarded as the best composition of the First World War. Unfortunately Pipe Major Lawrie died later that year of illness after being invalided home."

I also came across a discussion on Mudcat.org where someone had heard a song set to "The Battle of the Somme". Here are the lyrics:

"One Day We'll See Them" written by Alex Campbell

Darkness is fading, the day it is dawning
The fields they are empty, nae workers today.
Farmers and young men all have been going
To battles in lands that lie far away.

Yet one day we'll see them come by the hillside
Husbands and sons will return to their homes.
Yet still my heart bleeds; the price of their young pride
Their widows and sweethearts left sadly to mourn.

The call when it came found their menfolk aye ready,
Each knew the reasons or that's what they thought.
Then came the doubting but still they were steady
Slow dying in cold clay a'cursing their lot.

Yet one day we'll see them, there on the hillside
Though knowing in hearts they are but a gleam.
The grief in the long glen, the gloom at the fireside
Will pass like a Spring breeze that never has been.

(edited for spelling - of course it should be PM William LAWRIE)

Yep, I'm surprised Skirmish hasn't done very well this month. I thought it would be a strong contender again...

It is starting to look lie I will have to reconcile myself to the Battle of the Somme.  Though there is (just) time yet for some vote transfers to put CotN back on top.
Nice lyrics, BTW.

Fair comment I guess but maybe COTN will face some stiffer competition next month. I'm pleased with myself for resisting the urge to remove my vote to make a draw more of a possibility. >:E

Yep Close run thing! ..... For me the perception of the winning tune even though in the lively style that has been demonstrated in the wonderful scottish marches , by its name does not in my view lend itself to be seriously modified .... So I will give this one a miss and work on something else instead!... prob get my 1 row working more!
However i reckon i know i'm going to be wow'ed! by the entries of this tune as with the March tune entries which were absolutely superb! ... So hopefully not the dirgy versions!  8) ..... this ones just not for me!

Derek

Oo er! That's me out of it then, I prefer it as a lament but other strong opinions have also been passed with regard to its' use as such so I'll stick to ThOTM. Now then, where are the dots for Ba Ba Black Sheep?  ::)

that is a shame because I really would like to hear it played as a lament.  It isn't going to fit in with my rather gutsy style, and i am desperately trying to find slow tunes to try to develop a more melodic style for those listening at sessions (I get criticised (jokingly of course) for being too loud)
