hopefully not the dirgy versions!

Oo er! That's me out of it then, I prefer it as a lament but other strong opinions have also been passed with regard to its' use as such so I'll stick to ThOTM. Now then, where are the dots for Ba Ba Black Sheep?  ::)

that is a shame because I really would like to hear it played as a lament.  It isn't going to fit in with my rather gutsy style, and i am desperately trying to find slow tunes to try to develop a more melodic style for those listening at sessions (I get criticised (jokingly of course) for being too loud)

You will certainly get a dirgy one from me and I don't care what anyone says !

On a purely technical point this tune is a 'March'. Whether a retreat, slow or quick there will be an acceptable or even proper speed to march to. Goodness knows what the Legione etrange would do with it. Dirge central I shouldn't wonder.

Ditto. I was considering whether it would make a nice mazurka (on my rather crazy theory that mazurkas are to 9/8 what waltzes are to 6/8)... but on trying it out in my head a few mins ago, I think this is probably the tune that proves that my theory is a load of cobblers.

Grand Bal actually like dancing this way. But these are people who dance tango in mid mazurka, waltz backwards, and probably make love standing up in a hammock!  ;)

Well - I'll certainly give it a go (as I voted for it!) although I haven't intentionally played a dirge before. Has anyone else seen this Albion Band version?

That's certainly what I'll be basing my version on. Hmm, trying to create the power of a full rock band with a melodeon... can it be done?

what do we do if it's a draw?

... then we'll have to learn "North of the Somme" I guess.

Much better than the alternative!   :|bl
For those who wanted Cock of the North, a little lateral thinking from my youth made me think of a tune you can play and sing along to:
The Lambton Worm (heuked in the River Wear which skirts Durham Castle and Cathedral)

Connection??- lateral squeezing....
When Lord Lambton (Earl of Durham) did his thing
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/obituaries/article1265708.ece   (you'll have to pay mr Murdoch to see that soon)

The local Wearsiders, to assert again their renown to the world,  said that the hundreds of Lambton Arms pubs across County Durham, Land of the Prince Bishops, should be renamed Cock of the North... Could not work out why myself at the time, but there you go....innocent youth.

The music must be out there somewhere - I  know it by brain as it wiggled into my left ear so long ago and never came out.

Here are the words - http://www.robertolley.co.uk/lambtonworm/page4.html    Tho some say ' haad yez gobs' not posh haad "ya" gobs

There are some awful failures on youtube to pronounce Worm correctly (like  "warm" as in hot, but I find Alan Price doesn't too badly
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DdTdPislQs

I wonder, if we pray hard, whether doG would play it for us? (He is not so far away, over hill and dale, from the Wear, and indeed the Browney river, near which a certain John Peel used to hunt. But that's another tune, well off the Scotswood Road (pronounced by some as rorde near the Bleidin rare-cis) ;BUT, that is only just up the road from the greenfields where doG plays! :||: :||:

Seeing as how Cock of the North was winning there for a bit, I printed her up and started learning. Then when I checked back after the first of the month I saw that I was learning the wrong tune. But anyhow, Cock of the North is fun, so we made a video. Enjoy!

SoopAH PAH! And now I know how Aliens make offspring - no contact, just fizzical sound waves radiating between each other ending in a visual crescendo;D

PS I know my vote for CotN would not have made any difference(sorry!), but shamefacedly I could not remember how I found the voting page thread/box/poll box before; and  so gave up ...  where should I be looking??? ???
