Chrissie Leatham 78 recordings
« on: March 13, 2008, 06:27:35 PM »

I found a couple of Chrissie Leathams 78 sides on Rare Tunes. http://www.raretunes.org/tags/accordeon/ There are other accordion recordings on this site, mostly scottish.
I love these recordings,I'd like to know more about her.

I know that I've heard all these tunes before but some of the titles escape me.I'd appreciate any help with filling in the blanks and correcting any identification errors I've made.

Unfortunately I can only help you with the first recording, I pretty sure it's a Shetland reel - The Fairy Dance.

Thank you for posting this wonderful link! Never visited the Rare Tunes page before, love it  :D

The second tune in this track is "The Barren Rocks of Aden", with a slightly more ornate B, I think. Don't know the third tune.

The Fairy Dance it is, but it's not a Shetland piece. Composed by Nathaniel Gow (as "Largo's Fairy Dance") and associated with Scott Skinner, who published a set of variations on the tune.

The march tune after Inverness Gathering is very familiar to me but I have no name for it.

Just listening to Peter Wyper now... his box sounds amazingly like a harmonica!

Well, I got the information from a Aly Bain recording and it says "trad. Shetland Reel", and I guess that could imply that it have been traditionally played on the Shetland isles and not originated from Shetland, but nevertheless its a very nice reel!

Visit the Aberdeen University J. Scott Skinner archive
http://www.abdn.ac.uk/scottskinner/display.php?ID=JSS0643
to see a copy of Scott Skinner's variations of Nathaniel Gow's "The Fairy Dance", and click the audio link to hear a recording of Scott Skinner playing it.

With the Calcutta Cup match satisfactorily concluded, I can mention that, in their live performances, Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain usually dedicate this tune to the England rugby team.

I think the 'slightly ornate B' pf Barron Rocks of Aden was the Scott Skinner version.  It is also the version usually played by   Jimmy Shand  and published in his book of  book of bagpipe marches.

Well, the Folk Life Archive at Lund university used to have some melodeon recordings, but that was a while back as I recall. Right now they are apparently having some problems with the website http://etnhum.etn.lu.se/arkiv/  the site back online again, so try this link [swedish] and listen to last tune http://etnhum.etn.lu.se/arkiv/musik/sk_mus_ex.htm and this link with small samples[English] called "ring tones" http://etnhum.etn.lu.se/arkiv/musik/sk_mus_r.htm. http://www.folkemusik.dk/view.php3?SectionID=1142&ContentID=4237&ParentIDs=/1142/

Not that much...

Thanks for the great links Hasse.I don't think that I'd have been able to find the Lund University links on my own.

There used to be a good website about the life of Carl Jularbo but I haven't been able to find it lately. There were a few sound clips, including one of a female relative playing melodeon.

I did find a web page of traditional  music recordings that included this tantalizing offering. http://www.hurv.com/english/catalog/cds-eng/cd-38-eng/cd-38-eng.htm  Unfortunately the music samples don't work.

Here's a link to some modern recordings of traditional accordion music from the same label. http://www.hurv.com/english/catalog/cds-eng/cd-22-eng/cd-22-eng.htm

I'll start a post on swedish music with theses links, unless you beat me to it ;).

They worked ok for me, but I had to over ride the pop-up blocker on on browser.

Great playing

Yes!!Thank you Theo! :)

It's funny how some of the pages worked and others didn't.I haven't bought any new CDs lately but I'm seriously tempted with some of the offerings from this label.

I just had to add that it's wonderful to hear Carl Jularbo playing a variety of diatonics.I have a 16 Bass Hohner very similar to the 12 bass he's holding on the cover(I think that it's him). The distinct rythyms that he played come through whether he's playing the one row or a 5 row chromatic.Beautiful playing,so full of life.

If you're looking for older Swedish box tunes, try this one: http://www.amazon.ca/Folk-Music-Sweden-Harmonica-Accordion/dp/B000000UIT, its a great CD, with some brilliant rarities on it.

The website from which your first link is derived is great, and has quite a few other old recordings on it.  The front page is http://www.archive.org/index.php and is worth a look.

Got it! The third tune is "The Alma", a 2/4 pipe march, or "quickstep". It is frequently referred to as "The Heights of Alma", especially in ABC tune repositories, although there is a different tune, a 6/8 pipe march, with that title. Both are in the Queen's Own Highlanders (Seaforths and Camerons) book of pipe music. This has been bugging me since the topic was first posted. I've known this tune from childhood, without being able to put a name to it.
Peter Kennedy has included both these Chrissie Leatham recordings, along with some other old 78s (as padding, I think) on a CD of field recordings entitled "Scottish Button Buskers" (Folktrax 363). He lists only the 1st, 2nd and 4th tunes, but it's this very recording.

Thanks Bill for filling that final piece of the puzzle. The Session.org has a bare bones version of it.

One final question, what kind of accordion did Chrissie Leatham play?Since many of her students played piano accordion I kind of assumed she did too, there is very little information about her on the web.

Yes, from her students I assumed piano accordion also. One person who would know is her son, Owen Murray, Professor of Classical Accordion at the Royal Academy of Music in London. But I don't suppose he peruses this forum.
