Forming folk bands
« on: March 30, 2010, 02:54:41 PM »

Hi,

Does anyone know of any band-forming type websites aimed specifically at folk musicians? On the mainstream sites (BandMix etc etc), the description 'Folk' often just seems to mean American-style singer/songwriter + acoustic guitar or similar. How do members here find bands to join, or like-minded musicians to form one with?

I think the Unthanks have got foot-rot

Don't you just hate it when that happens?

Back on topic. The three folk bands I was involved with all came about through meeting other musicians at folk clubs or sessions. It might even be worth mentioning on here that you'd like to form/join a folk band, the music you're interested in and roughly where you are in the world. It might be worth joining Talkawhile too as there are quite a lot of musos about on that forum.

And now back to an everyday tale of grumpy folk.  :|glug

I've always chosen to collaborate with musicians I've met and got to know.  It has always struck me as being easier that way.

It certainly is. That way, you know what sort of music the other musicians like, their style of playing, and of course the people themselves, so you know whether it's all likely to gel or not.

My current ceilidh band were all members of the same morris side when we started out as a band, and although we had to practise up a lot of new tunes, we were all well used to playing together so it worked almost instantaneously. My previous ceilidh band was formed in a similar way, and as people left the band, replacements were recruited from players who we knew, often from sessions.

I know someone who plays with a couple of his friends in a non-folk band, and they recruit by advertising, but it seems that the people that turn up are usually either poor musicians or completely unreliable, and they never seem to get anything together.

So, if you want to be in a band, get out and meet fellow musicians and play tunes together, and see where it takes you.   :||: :||:

I have the same problem, my fiddle player is looking to do fewer gigs, so I am looking for a new line up. If you are in the South West of England you could try advertising on this web site. http://www.flaxey-green.co.uk/Pages/Musicians_Available.html.
