Where are you?
« on: April 17, 2010, 12:26:29 PM »

I'd like to see at least the country filled in in the members details. I know it's possible to work out from time of posting where people are likely to be, but if location was a "must fill in" box i'd be even happier. And if members want to fill in what town or county, even better.

Not everyone is comfortable with giving personal details on a public forum and it's important that we all respect that. Others don't give details because it simply doesn't occur to them to do so.

'Country' at least seems important as it gives much context to what is said. I similarly like the way most of us say what boxes we own - again it puts some opinions in context. i post under my own name. I'm comfortable with other's anonymity - although this isn't exactly the Jesuit 'Alter Ego' playing forum so I'm sometimes puzzled as to why they are so shy.  I think the nicknames people adopt can be qute fun.

Personally I think most of us could usefully fill the name and location boxes on the "Forum Profile Information" (5th item down on the 'my profile' menu).  Mods: is there any way you can configure this page to encourage an instrument list?

I agree it is useful when members at lest include their country of residence in their profile, but AKAIK there is not a facility to make it mandatory to fill in a particular profile field.

Chris,  I don't quite see the value of, and can see some dangers in encouraging members to list boxes they own, so that feature will not be appearing.  Sorry.

Amazing the things that one spots on the forum ...especially when one's not looking for them...

a signature that gives the name, county and country!

... this makes life easier (or would do if everyone follows suit) when boxes are put up for sale e.g. there's no point in getting excited about a great box only to find it's in Texas... (Postage and customs duty are prohibitively expensive). M.A.D. can be very maddening at times :P

I'm happy to follow your lead Pete (Tallship) 8)

Where am I?

None of your business!

Here are some useful features for accordion thieves...

A complete list of all instruments and values.

Detailed geographical location of said instruments.

A complete daily schedule of when the forum member is home.

If any of this is made manditory, my participation in this forum will be history.

I'm currently counting my blessings of life in a country where accordions are not valued more than a Television or a Watch.  I recently experienced a house break-in and they took many things but not one concertina or Accordion. What they did take was not half as valuable as the free reed instruments I own, A fake Rolex from Hong Kong and some other assorted valuables.  I think I could post here that I have a Briggs and no one in my neck of the woods would think of breaking in for it.

I chose my pseudonym thinking it might be of interest to participants in the forum to see how geographically diverse is interest in melodeons. It must be said that melodeon players are rather thin on the ground here - some have said this is a good thing after hearing me play.

Sorry Dave, unless you have very different thieves from our own excellent British ones, I think you may be a little over-sensitive. I've had two 'proper' burglaries at my home in 30 years, and in neither case did a single musical instrument disappear. Yes TV and hi-fi went from the same room, and I always leave some cheap paste jewels in the bathroom to satisfy them ;) But I think disposing of a very recognisable melodeon (or three) in our neighbourhood pubs might have been on the 'too hard' list. To say nothing of having to lug the boxes about, publicly.

As further reassurance- My three 'nice' accordions are insured at a rate of about 0.6% of value (this 'all risk' and Worldwide!) That's well below general rates and again suggests that melodeon theft isn't a big problem. Actually I've only come across one instance personally (opportunistic from a car at a central French festival) 'though we do get the odd report in this community.

Localising me? Well, I'm not a particularly private individual, and am happy to be associated with the ancient Hundred of Wirral on the South Bank of the Mersey. I see there were about 400,000 of us there in 2001, and certainly more thieves than melodeon players!  I just cannot see a few posts here assisting their worthy craft ::) In contrast I do disguise the 'take me home' setting on my SatNav. It's programmed to take me several 100m away from my flat.

You may take a 'none of your business' view for other reasons  - well that's fine - I do concur with Theo that such detail should remain non mandatory and within non searchable profiles.  But I also think people should give at least general location where it is relevant to post. eg some of the stuff from our Austrian members has specifically interested me - because of that context.

Don't sat navs do that when you put the correct address in anyway...well mine does. lol! ;)

I give country and county....I think that relevant enough and all the info you need for a casual acquaintance.

Yes, I think it's a good idea to be open about things, the benefits greatly outweighing the dangers as far as I'm concerned.

I just can't imagine a burglar being remotely interested in an accordion, unless they were players themselves, and this concept doesn't really compute for me!  Any other burglar would surely take one look at it, and think "What the f... is it?  I can't flog that!"  And if he thought even more about it, he might then think that the only way he could get rid of it would be to some kind of weird specialist musician, who might very well know the previous owner - too risky, leave well alone!

I have to second Mr Ryall's statement above.  As I said I had a break-in no less than 2 months ago and had 3 of my prized Hohners and my Saltarelle sitting in plain view.  They instead took my radio, a video camera and some watches and a laptop and ignored the beautiful Lachenal proudly displayed on my Mantle.  So while there may be some clever accordion playing thief out there he didn't break into my house recently.

I kind of agree - I mean, who would want to steal a melodeon - now a really piano accordion (as above) I can fully understand  >:E
