ToTM Backgrounds
« on: April 28, 2010, 09:14:04 AM »

It is noticeable that many of the video recordings for ToTM appear to have been made in the player's bedroom.  Various possible explanations for this social phenomenon appear plausible, for example:

1.  That's where they are banished to.

2.  It's quieter up there.

3.  You think you can play secretly in the bedroom.

3.  The dog can't join in with the tune.

4.  It improves the player's love life.

5.  Melodeonistas can only afford flats with one room.

6.  After you've been playing for a bit, it's nice to have a little nap.

But perhaps there are other possible causes?

It's the first room you come to when you step out of the closet.

I wouldn't say that many are in bedrooms, they look more like studies, lounges, living rooms, dining rooms, stairs etc.

Bedrooms are often good places for sound recording if you haven't got a proper studio with acoustic treatment, because a bed makes a good wideband sound absorber.

Mine have all been done in what was built as a conservatory but gets used as a recording studio, and it does have some acoustic treatment (and a pile of mics, cables, recording gear etc. resident in the room) Also for videos it's got the most light during the day, though that's a bit academic as most of mine were done at night ::)

There are some nice Youtube videos done in big rooms with natural reverberation, but most private houses don't have a room big enough for this approach to work really well.

Kitchens seem to be a popular choice too...

I record mine in the living room coz its the only room I can get far enough from the camera when recording so that you see more than just a close up of the bellows. Plus its lighter in there.

I expect Chris's comment may have been prompted by my latest YouTube offering - which, yes, was made in the bedroom (as was the Princess Royal one). Reasons for choice:

1. appropriate height to sit on to play - chair/bed height very important,  in my eyes (it's my work... ;) lol), plus. no arms to encumber, etc. (ie who can play melodeon, well, on a low, squashy sofa, or, eg, an IKEA Poang?!)
2. appropriate surface opposite (armchair arm) to stand camera on, on it's little tripod (plus, still room to get behind camera, to see what you're actually filming! more guesswork required from such as the mid-landing window-sill... Also, level surface to quickly scramble back to position, from setting camera on time delay! having to negotiate steps in between is more problematic...)
3. lovely, light room, set up high with expansive views over the surrounding countryside - so, uplifting to the spirit. Front faces south, whereas back rooms very dark.
4. as Anahata has said, good acoustics. It's a big room - 15' square, approx. with relatively high ceiling with frieze and coving - and, as the house is a (very slow) renovation project, very little furniture in there currently, to detract from this. Acoustics in the living-room with equivalent floor space, below, are not quite as good - perhaps due to fact ceiling is higher relative to footprint, plus more elaborate coving, possibly causing some 'bounce-back' in the sound. I have to be particularly careful with the Oakwood in this respect - as feedback to self can sometimes be horrible, depending on the room.
5. I am also, relatively, further removed up there from my horrible neighbours  :Ph, so can play with less self-consciousness.
6. Ease of access up there to the 'melodeon-cupboard' under the stairs to the 2nd floor - so always tend to be more melodeons to choose from, hanging around the bedroom or landing!
7. OK, so it's not a very inspiring background (eg too much view across the room towards the original sash window causes lighting problems), but, at least it looks tidy ;D (as, much of the rest doesn't!).

Mine are just dependent on whether my housemate is downstairs watching telly when I want to record it! My usual playing room is very dark, which is why I don't like using it for recording. Mind you, I'd prefer not to use the bedroom either, as it's usually far too messy   :D

Hmm, Mum and Dad have a lovely conservatory with good acoustics - I might have to make a visit next time I'm ready to record a totm!

and in my case the sound of traffic and neighbours mowing their lawns, dogs barking and planes going overhead.

Oh yeah, all that too!
I'm lucky to live in a reasonably quiet environment. I thought of birdsong because it's one of the problems I do have with the conservatory/studio, depending on time of year/day. Heavy rain is bad news too...

I did some recording (just redoing bits, rather than a whole CD thankfully) once directly under Heathrow's flight path. Wait for plane to go over... *WHOOOSH*, and you have 2 minutes to do the recording before the next one comes!

Has anyone else noticed that you can't seem to get folding camping chairs without arms anymore?  Whenever I'm at a festival I find everyone else using my chairs and I have to lie on my back with the box on my chest if I want to play!  Now the chairs are getting a bit ragged and all the new ones have arms with drinks holder and plate holders.

I don't have a video camera, but using the H2 gives good results as does a pair of AKG C1000s set up as super-cardioid.  That cuts out a lot of unwanted echoes even in my rather spartan house.  I must try it outdoors sometime...

Just for you, Rob - I picked up the latest copy of the Lidl promotional newsletter today and, what will be in store from May 6th, but a camping chair with no arms!

Have you seen Jan Anderss upsetting his poultry ?

A cracking tune and an unusual setting - hopefully the Scandanavian RSPCA don't catch up with him.........
