Tune of the Month for May 2010 - Michael Turner's Waltz
« on: April 30, 2010, 11:42:44 PM »

This month's winner:

Michael Turner's Waltz

A beautiful waltz, typically played in G (but feel free to play it how you like). Commonly attributed as a traditional English waltz, as found in the Sussex Tunebook, it also appears in Mozart's KV 536 (Six German Dances), although it's hard to know if he wrote the tune or simply heard a traditional tune and incorporated it in his piece.

Luca Celano has written a lesson on this tune; music notation, how to play it on melodeon, and much more. Thanks Luca! - find it here:

Good luck!

Lovely! Thanks for the link to the recording, Luca. As posted on a related thread, the score is available here, if you want to follow the music while listening.

The No.2 dance is on the 2nd page of the pdf file, with its trio, used for Michael Turner's Waltz, is on the 3rd page.

The Mozart piece is available here http://bellowsandstrings.blogspot.com/2010/01/michale.html
Is that the Boskovsky recording?
The sheetmusic of the MT waltz part is also here (ignore the D.C.).

Hi all
Is this tune more suited to the C row on a G/C or can I play in G. I'd like to learn it in G as i expect that if I meet somebody who plays it they would probably play it in G and then i could join in but if it's more compatible to the C basses then I'd prefer to go for the easier key. So what do you all think? Suggestion of Basses would also be much appreciated.

Both. I think it fits better on the C row, but it works in G as well.
Possible chords:
Code: [Select]
|: G / D | G / / | C / / | G / / |
G / D | G / D | G / D | G / / :|
|:C / / | D / / | G / D | G / / |
C / / | G / / | G / D | G / / :|

Watching the chords on that blog, and doing some crossrowing, I think there might be hope for this tune:) I now have a D/G box - yippie! (not that that matters when I play on my own, but it's a nice little thing!)  :|||: :|||: :|||:

I'm jumping in early on this tune. I tried several ways of playing it, but settled on this one. Besides, how often do you get the chance of playing Mozart (if it's really his composition) on a Cajun tuned 4-stop melodeon? I like the combo with the guitar, although I am tempted to re-tune the thirds on the box a bit sharper so it's  more conducive to playing with others. My apologies on the ending, it's somewhat bumpy. :|bl

It would seem to be a traditional tune from Germany or there abouts, Mozart put it in the set along with 5 other 'German Dances', so I don't think he can claim ownership of it. Mozart was writing circa 1770, Michael Turner's MS are dated circa 1850. Lots about MT here: http://www.mustrad.org.uk/articles/turner.htm

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Lovely bounce and delicately played. Thanks for posting!
(I'm sure Mr A to Z [anag] would have approved.)

Salterelle Connemara III, with minimal basses (low bass and thirds cut) and single treble reeds, then third time round full basses and two (LM) treble voices.

I cheated on the registration change: the two parts were stitched together with Audacity.

Second time round the tune a RH harmony part comes in - that's as played, no electronic trickery, I promise  :||:

Wow, what a delightful and interesting sound! Very much like a wind ensemble of Renaissance woodwinds, shawm, crumhorn, dulcian etc. Very enjoyable!
