Your ideal workshop
« on: May 26, 2010, 11:51:08 AM »

Having browsed the TOTM entries I've been thinking about what I'd like to learn and from whom!

So my line up would be:-

Bases - Anahata & Clive
Morris - Ollie & Lester
Bellow control - DTN & Clive
Ornamentation - DTN
How to get the most out of a Pokerwork - Ollie
Keeping a steady tempo - Sandy
Music Theory - Chris Ryall (although I don't always understand what he's on about)

Fellow students should be LDT and Juker as they are so encouraging  :M and Al for spiritual support

So what would your line up be?

BTW I've never been to a workshop so I've no idea what I'm talking about ;D

nice idea. as mentioned before (I think) I can arrange venue for up to 40 folk self-catering, bunk beds, kitchen dining room, sitting room, showers - only 6.50 OR 7 quid (cant remember which) a night  at one of my climbing club houses either in N Wales or two houses in Lakes (Grasmere or Duddon fells).  2 have room for some tents/campers. mid-week, long weekend, NWales train&bussable, Lakes better with car-pool.
[size of 'practice' rooms vary (big kitchen/dinings with various smaller rooms & small to largish dorms) but that shouldn't be insurmountable for willing squeezers... and lots of room outside when no rain, and at all three potential for lakeandriversnorkelplayingrecordattempts....]
For German visitors (!) Liverpool/Manchester airports with some helpful pickup squeezer / but only Swiss at Blackpool.. and you could probably stay on longer or arrive earlier at the house if u wanted a longer break to lessen flight cost impact, before or after the squeeze

Ha, you weren't expecting that!

It's a while since I've been at a workshop (I'd love to teach a festival sometime) but I reckon a day with Mairtin O'Connor would be the ideal for me.

My ideal workshop would be within an hours train journey from southend (and within walking distance of a station)....so I didn't have to ask for a lift of pay out for accommodation.

When I first joined a Morris side, the two box players had attended the last workshop of the Overton festival (now defunct).  As the only pupils, they had the full benefit of JK's teaching.  It certainly didn't do them any harm!

Sitting in the pub last night, I had the opportunity to watch DTN playing my box (always nice to hear what it sounds like, especially when being well played) and can suggest that he should also have featured under the "basses" section!

Dead right, I did want to suggest DTN for every category (except music theory) but I thought it might be a bit much for the poor fellow!!

Every few weeks or couple of months with the same circle of friends attending and the occasional new face. Some times at my house or at the nearby home of an old friend. Attendees of various skill levels so I can see where I have come from and where I am aspiring to.  Each attendee bringing along whatever tune they are working on at the moment and getting an individual critique but in a way that all present benefit from. Top-class workshop leader.
Well, actually this is the set-up when Brian Peters comes over to Sheffield every few weeks.  It is a fantastic resource from which I have benefitted enormously.
Also, when it is at Steve Freereeder's house, as it was on Monday, we are provided with industrial quantities of tea and biscuits.

My ideal workshop would have a decent large bandsaw, planer/thicknesser, belt sander, spray booth, spindle moulder, polishing buffs, flypress, lathe, scroll saw, and a full set of perpetually sharp cutting tools.

You are all very kind! ... Actually I would love to give mrlodeon workshops (never done it) and I should put some effort into some ideas and materials towards doing this! ... I've always had an unconventional approach to music that worked for me! .. so would love to have the opportunity pass on the ideas!
As i have no musical theory knowledge ... just common sense for sounds that work , rhythm generation and tune development from well known tunes in a different way etc . ... and simple (interesting bass structures!)

As a day job I regularly present in technical healthcare and lecture @ universities ... but it would be nice to educate with something more important ... THE MELODEON!
Anyone in chippenham this weekend? .... listen for the melodeon (yes Sandy i know you are there so we can swop ideas too! ;D ;D
Good Idea!! Derek  :||:

We've got Tune of the Month and Theme of the Month already so how about Tuition of the Month?

Those with something to impart could put forward ideas for tutorials which could be then voted on; or ideas for tuition could be put forward and voted on and then anyone can put forward their ideas on the tuition theme via YouTube or however.

Whaddaya think?

If you like workshops and are looking for your ideal line up how does a choice of three workshops from John Kirkpatrick, Paul Scourfield, Ken Keppler (for the cajun enthusiast) Issy Emeney  (oh and me as well!) on one day grab you? If you live outside the Midlands its a bit of a trek to Shropshire but check out Squeezing Shropshire if it's within range for you-should be a great day and an excellent concert in the evening (and other people on melnet have said very good value!).Details are on the news and events forum. My ideal workshop for learning to play would have 50% of the time with a great box player/teacher and 50% of the time in  amixed instrument group.

Tend to agree with Theo on this. A theme is a good thing, and a mix of instruments a real boon for sessioning in the evenings.  So a 'music' course rather than an instrument instructional. In this respect Anahata and Mary's recent Fen Music event in the Shropshire hills was just right  :D

I've actually given tuition at Francois Heims place in the Cevennes .. they had me teaching massage a dos = "back massage"  :Ph
