Hmmm... I can't think of anyone else off hand. I would expect you're more likely to find someone in London.

I'm hoping that it's more about techniques and understanding as I do play quite a lot of other instruments so understand basic music principles like rhythm, one hand playing one thing, the other something different, notation etc but after two weeks I'm really struggling with the air button concept

If you've got the basics of music and play other instruments you'll be fine.
The air button is one of those things you just "get" with practice.
The trouble is, when a beginner you're struggling to find notes and playing slowly, both of which mean you keep running out of air when it's least convenient.
You do at some stage need to get used to:
  • Using the air button while you're actually playing  a note, without losing the sound
  • Using it in advance when you've got lots of notes in the same direction coming up
Good luck with it.

Gulp! Thanks for the advice - I'm currently starting to add basses in now which is entertaining.  Cock O The North sounds like it might have drunk a few pints too many at the moment  :|glug  ;D

Hi LegalLorna,

Can't help practically as I'm a learner myself but also living in Norfolk, although Broadland rather than 'Kingdom Country'

March will see the next Melodeons and More Day, run by the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust, held at Mendlesham just off the A140, if you know LdTemps she can probably give you a better run down on what might suit you but there is a whole day of workshops in different styles or for different levels of ability, many by revered contributors to this forum.

http://www.eatmt.org.uk/m&m.htm   url of M & M day next years not yet mentioned in detail

http://www.eatmt.org.uk/traditional_music_day.htm  is the url for this years Trad music day at Stowmarket, Sept 4th, which I am hoping to make.......

I will be there, and I hope I don't leave without having met both you (or do I know you already ???) and LegaLorna, not to mention any other melnetters who are coming and who I don't know yet.

You won't miss Mary and me - there's even a pic of us on the trad music day page!

Please see http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,4132.msg51824.html#msg51824
... (could I ask people to keep this thread very focused, please).  I guess in the background I've seen things like EATMT or the network Jaques Paris set up in Bourbonnaise France. Basically for traditions to survive and indeed evolve there has to be passage to next generations. But IMO a set of willing teachers of reasonable competence will be enough for now. If we get enough I'll offer the list to the mods here - this forum would be the best place for it.  Actually Theo's response was exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for.

I will be at EATMT day on 4th September so hopefully we can meet up and exchange details for forming our own mini-network.  Thanks all.

Hello LegalLorna

I am a beginner to melodeon playing and also own a Sandpiper bought from The Music Room, Cleckheaton a few weeks ago. So far I'm very pleased with instrument, wish I could say the same regarding my playing :||:

I teach melodeon in Devon and if enough were interested, would also teach in Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset. Just thought I'd mention it!

Hi All,

I'm a total beginner (started August). I'm over 16, but not quite 58 years old and looking for guidance, tips & inspiration to progress.

I have a D/G 2 row Scarlatti (£300'ish) - lovley sound but never quite sure where my fingers go to match the sounds in my ear (sorry can't be reading music). I play acoustic guitar (self taught) so I do have a little musical ability. Looking to make some jolly sounds for my own entertainment, and am at present trying to put some 'seasonal' tunes together to give the family a cheer!

I'm in Worthing West Sussex but am very willing to drive within a couple of counties. ;D

What a good idea ths thread is, and some sound advice too.

If you're based in the eastern counties, the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust have been running tuition for over ten years now. Currently offering two series of evening classes in Stowmarket, Suffolk. Groups are small (usually 4-8 people) and the series comprises four fortnightly classes on a different theme each term.

New students always welcome (contact info@eatmt.fsnet.co.uk) and I'm always happy to talk to potential tutors too.

We get people travelling regularly from as far afield as Southend, Ely, and north Norfolk. The group format and structure of the classes seems to work well - we've taught well over a hundred people over the years.

After a very quick scan of this thread I don't think I've noticed any offers of tuition in the Manchester or Sheffield areas.  I'm in Glossop, Derbyshire (towards the Manc end of the A57) and have people coming to me for lessons from both areas.  I also give regular classes at a couple of friendly houses around Sheffield, at which Steve Freereader is a regular attender and stalwart supporter.

I teach G/D in essentially English style, though I've been bullied into giving advice on French stuff before now.

I'm in Ilkeston, Derbyshire and been playing 20+ years.

I have also played guitar in all sorts of styles since 1964 on the pub/club and folk circuit - however I never got around to learning to read music....Thank goodness for midi :)

If anyone would like to learn how to play melodeon (not from dots though) please get in touch, I have loads of Morris tunes, English Country Dance, an a few Irish, Scottish and French things that I'm able to pass on. Plus ideas on style, technique etc...

When I first started playing it took me hours of messing around to remember things and find my way around the box that I am patient with anyone who wants to learn.

If you are in my locallity, get in touch.

I live near York and seeking melodeon lessons in this area. I have a D/G melodeon and no experience.  I am over 16. Thirsk or Northallerton would be fine too.
Is there anybody out there?
