Thanks, Derek - just do it in the original key if you prefer, I can easily transpose it.  I notice you also sometimes play across the LHS too for some nice chords - There's what sounds like a Bb chord with a C, to give a nice Bb9 drone at one point, which sounds very effective.

Prob is I've no idea of what i actually play ! ..  hehe! :o
I've decided to put bits up in chunks on a flickr site .. so heres a first bit of a music variations on a GD box

Also found in a version called "Three Case Knives" and a similar Italian tune "Rostiboli" - I don't know which came first. I also don't know if that tune (or family of tunes) is related to the Dusty Miller or not. The A music is similar; the B isn't.

There was a lot of discussion on the tradtunes list which I think is available as a Yahoo! group.

Does anyone know what Rostiboli means in Italian or is it their interpretation of Rusty Gully?

They used to make Gully Knives in Sheffield for butchers etc the groove was the 'throat'  Some say to let blood out when stabbing others say to make it lighter.  Google it!

It doesn't seem to be a word that means anything, but there is an old medieval dance called Rostiboli gioioso.

Here's my offering, with Isaac's Maggot to follow, as I liked DTN's version a lot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_Pu4utWhzk

Different keys, and a different arrangement for the other tune from Derek's, but I have borrowed quite a few ideas from his chords - many thanks!

This was taken on a different camera from my previous attempts - a Canon Ixus.  The original file was massive, and of much higher visual quality, but Youtube seem to have cut it down a lot, and also rather changed the acoustics.  At least my previous aspect ratio problem has gone away.

I'm running out of time on this TOTM! I'd better try to record one tomorrow.

Derek, here's the complete layout:  The LHS outer row F#/C# is very useful when playing in D to get the thirds in a bass run, though I notice I haven't used it on these tunes, and the D#/G# gives a full LHS chromatic scale.  Andy Cutting's design.

                    Amaj/Emaj   A/E   Dmaj/Amaj  D/A   Gmaj/Dmaj   G/D   F#/C#
Basses:
                  A#maj/Fmaj  A#/F  Bmaj/Emin  B/E   Cmaj/Cmaj    C/C   D#/G#

The three rows:

          C/ A#    E/D     D#/F    A#/G#   C/A#    E/D      D#/F   A#/G#  C/ A#

      G/C      B/E      D/F#   G/A       B/C     D/E      G/F#      B/A     D/C     G/E

D/G     F#/B    A/C#     D/E     F#/G     A/B     D/C#      F#/E    A/G      D/B      F#/C#

Must get those clacky buttons seen to!

Superb drive!

Thanks, Chris, but I honestly believe this comes from my tripoint strap system, rather than any skill.

(As for the shirt, why do you think I set up the camera so close to the box, if not to hide it as much as I could!)

It's pathetic I know but can I just say how much I'm enjoying the way that TOTM and ThOTM is drawing the best out of the many good players on melnet. It's like a feeding frenzy with one after another picking up an idea and running with it, passing it on, developing it then passing it back. Shortly thereafter we see a tune turned on its head, played in an impossible time signature and transposed to a minor 19th key (well it feels like that anyway). Along the way we see beginners putting in solid performances, improving month after month. They accept mistakes with good grace but more importantly, play through them, or stop, take a deep breath and carry on. That's what music is all about, long may it continue!  :|glug

Here's my offering for this month. Recorded in the garden, not so easy with tantrum throwing toddlers on one side and a loud donkey on the other! Have the usual problem with tempo and the usual question - who's speeding?

enjoy

I only detected a very slight increase in speed, most of it came during the three long notes at the beginning of the B part, and the similar phrase a few bars later.  Each time you played that bit you added a tiny speed increment.  Just enjoy giving those notes full measure.

I couldn't think of anything massively interesting to do with this tune, so I played it slowly. It didn't stay that slow for long, I am quite proficient at speeding up unfortunately. It doesn't sound too undeliberate though, so I think I got away with it.
