Theme of the Month for June 2010 - Write a Tune!
« on: June 01, 2010, 12:33:38 AM »

Something a little different this month, I think. How about having a go at writing a new tune, recording it and sharing it with us all? If you've never done this sort of thing before, here's your excuse to give it a try!

I'm sure there'll be plenty of interesting discussion about how to go about this, but here's a few starting thoughts.

- Try making up a tune in your head; whistle/hum it to yourself, record yourself singing it (just for you of course - so you don't forget it!) before you go anywhere near picking up a melodeon.

- A completely different approach. Come up with a time signature (waltz/reel/....) that you like. Mess around on the bass end of a melodeon and come up with a chord sequence you like. Write a chunk of melody to fit the chord sequence.

- If you're lucky enough to be able to play a different instrument (piano, etc), try doodling on that. When you come up with something you like... record yourself again, before you pick up the melodeon. And then learn to play it on the melodeon!

Good luck! Give it a try; you may have a undiscovered talent!

Cheers,

Clive

Clarification request:
Is it a rule that the tune must be written in response to this challenge, not "here's one I did earlier"?

I've posted a couple of my own compositions already, but very happy to make up a brand new "tune for June" so I'll do that anyway.

This is an experiment.
I wrote this just now, scribbled it on a piece of paper and ABC'd it.
From my desk at work - so it has NEVER BEEN PLAYED or even heard.
I'll record a performance tonight, but if any one wants to have a go at playing it - feel free!
First version in C because I imagined it played on a 1-row in that key, but D (below) will work just as well
This might make a good followup to another jig called "The Merry Month".

Better get on with some work now...

I think it would be nice if we all do a tune written this month (that's certainly what I intend to do), but I don't want to stop those who don't have time to write a new tune this month from posting one they've already written.

Clear?  ;D

Cheers,

Clive

T: The First of June

I forgot, of course, to check if there's already a tune of that name.
But the other one looks like a hornpipe...

Anahata, as you are captive in work without a melodeon to hand I've taken the liberty of recording your tune on the Shand Morino, a very nice jig ;)

Hurrah - another triumph of internet collaboration.
Thank you - I'm looking forward to hearing this  :||:

That's just depressing  (:) It would take me ages to write anything that good!  It's a cracking tune (sounds great on whistle apart from the low C# which I fiddle).

In case anyone's forgotten or is new since it happened, there's a useful thread here, which might be worth reviving if anyone's in need of/can offer ideas or help:

It would take me ages to write anything that good!
Thank you - you're too kind but I'm sure it isn't "that good"!

This my first stab, all I have to do now is learn it on melodeon as I wrote using the bandoneon (which becomes a slower, gloomy piece) and whistle.

I see it as a 6/8 march rather than a jig but I couldn't get the Q function to work on my copy of ABC Navigator (it's probably my fault as I'm new to this lark  (:))

This my first stab
Looks nice - see, it wasn't so hard  ;D

And why not show it to us on the bandoneon?

Dear all,

Here's my first attempt at this Theme of the Month - a tune written approx 90 minutes ago:

Parsley's Hornpipe

I was really intending to write a frightfully clever and pretty 5 time waltz, when this thing came out. So much for planning! It's one of those tunes that sounds really familiar, made up of lots of common phrases, so the odds that I haven't written it at all, but just played an extremely common tune from subconscious memory are really quite high. Does anyone recognise it?

I've dusted off my old Hohner 1 row, in G (its debut recording!) for this - it's an old style hornpipe just made to sit on a one row melodeon.

I'll try again to write that frightfully clever 5 time waltz later in the month perhaps.

Cheers,

Clive

Oh that's annoying  >:( Just as I start to recognise a bit of a tune it moves on to something else vaguely familiar which is also gone before I have chance to figure out what it is. Bad Clive, detention for you my lad, you've just invented pseudo-plagiarism.  :|glug

Here's my own rendition of the one I wrote this morning:

I'm beginning to think all tunes are like that :-\

Mine, I have realized after getting home and sitting down to play it, has a lot of The Recruiting Officer in it. Bits of other tunes too.

If it's the Parsley I think it is - further aand possibly inspirational Herbs can be found at http://www.thechestnut.com/herbs/the-herbs.html. Please don't inhale!

Nice tune, Clive  - I didn't recognise more than 4 notes in a row at any point.

I think I've placed what influenced the first 4 bars - it's the music played when Igglepiggle and Upsy Daisy climb the stairs into the Ninky Nonk (BBC TV series for kiddies 'In the Night Garden')! Bars 5 to 6/7ish are driving me crazy. They're from something horribly famous, but I just can't place it. I thought it might have been 'Jacob', but having listened to it, it doesn't seem to be. Never mind - in my student days there was a saying that copying from one source is plagiarism, copying from two sources is research!

Re: Parsley, no it's not the Herbs, though that's a very good guess. In fact, it's named after this little fella. Isn't he sweet?

Cheers,

Clive
