A second attempt at 'Downton Hoopla'...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ul1eQvXoOUw

This time, it's twice through the main tune, with a few additional variations and a lot less, er, 'rubato'.  The stuff at the beginning is unchanged.  I'm not sure how much better this makes it overall, but it does at least sound more complete, at least to my ears.

I think we need an easier ThOTM next time!  This was hard.   :(

Lovely - and that's a great tune you've written there! Yes, tune writing *is* hard, isn't it? Who knows what next month ThOTM will bring?

I wasn't planning on entering anything for this month's theme, as I'm usually not very good at writing music. I often find I either write something on manuscript that I can't play, or else I come up with something nice by noodling around that I either forget, or it's not original. However, this time, this lovely little stinkypated bouree slipped out. This is probably the first piece of music that I've written that I'm genuinely happy with (save maybe the pavane I wrote on guitar for my music coursework) As far as I can tell it's original... I decided to give it a not very original but fitting name. Enjoy.  :M

If some kind soul could transcribe it, I'd be everso greatful.  (:)

It works for me.  One question, though - what makes it (or, indeed, anything else...) a bouree?  I'm still struggling to understand the difference between pretty much all of the tune types that are mentioned here and wouldn't know where to begin in knowing whether something was a bouree or not.

Also, I'm guessing that the 'is it original' dillema is just par for the course - I know I had/have the same feeling with my tune.  I suppose you just have to ignore the worries and accept that there's a chance that someone might question it at some point afterwards?

Well, it's in 2/4 and sounds kinda French... I checked and it is possible to dance a bouree to it, so I guess it must be. I'm not actually sure what constitutes a bouree, apart from the above. I suppose it's a bit like asking what makes a Morris tune. Glad you like it though.

Push, push, relax - or push ... relax in this 2/4 example. It's also called 'heartbeat' rhythm (and certainly has that effect on the Fair Sex).

Ollie and Chris - thanks to you both.  I'll now go and see if I can find some YouTube examples where that emphasis is made obvious.

Having seen that Ollie has managed to figure the abc out for his tune, it's given me the motivation to find the tutorial site and attempt the same thing with my own tune.  It took me a fair few tries to get the mistakes and errors sorted out, but I think I've got it now.  It's very strange for me to hear what the tune sounds like when played through the Folkinfo MIDI player - it's almost as if it's not really my tune when heard like that.

So, here it is, should anyone be interested:

:o I think I've cracked abc!

Well done Ollie, you already had the required knowledge (ie music theory of staff notation) so it was just a matter of learning the syntax peculiar to abc files. It's really quite powerful if you take the time to delve into the innards and explore abc plus. Be warned that the additional commands are far from universally accepted though.  ::)

Hello
Well Ive just managed to squeeze this into June's session . Sorry about the haste of the recording , few doddgy moments and all but its all kind of there .
Only problem Ive had abc wise is that the cords dont play (in abc explorer ) unless you
change the time to 4/4.......?

I decided to write another tune for this month's ThOTM. I decided this under an hour ago. I have written one, but my memory card is full and it's taking a million years to publish Rusty Gulley and back up everything else so that I can wipe it. I have to leave in about 10 minutes and am unlikely to get back before midnight. This could be tight...

I've done it!

It's not a great tune, I set out to compose a morris tune, hence the attempt at slows, but it doesn't really work. Not bad for a very short space of time though. I started less than an hour ago and it took ages to record and publish. You'll notice if you look closesly that I have an attack of hayfever half way through...

I like both of these a lot.  Not being a dancer, I'm not really taken with morris-style 'slows' in the first place, so I'd personally agree that the new tune would have been better without them.  Even so, I think I probably prefer the new one out of the two and suspect that it's still got the potential to develop further, given a bit of time.  You seem to have a knack for this composition thing - I look forward to hearing more!

And as we go into July, we have a new theme! Please continue to post any new tunes that missed the deadline by a day or two (or a month or two or three...) here. I'm rubbish at deadlines too.
