Drones in C or Bb
« on: June 08, 2010, 03:30:58 AM »

Hello all--

Does anyone have a favorite tune using the "ready to go" C drone on the DG or the Bb on the GCF?  Thanks for any recommendations or ideas?  Regards,  Steve.

You can do Orange in Bloom on the DG with just a C drone, but it's nice to then bring in the moving chords after the first time through or it gets a bit dull. You can also do lots of D drones on a DG by using the reversals, and this works for lots of tunes in D or G - experiment!

Bruno leTron's Valhermeil is usually played on a French or Belgian G/C melodeon, where their ready-made drone is in F.    I didn't find it in C or Bb youtube,  but it'll transpose (either up a key or down one)!

Oh, I love that Chris. There goes the rest of the morning! Have you got an ABC or dots in G?

There's another fairly ropey (but good) video of Valhermeil here.. from a massed Belgian set at St. Chartier '08...

Gives a better idea of how the harmonies on the 'C' section work - especially with the crowd joining in! ;D

I was there. Super concert from the Boombal lot - who'd followed on from Pignol/Milleret Duo
A veritable melodeonic feast, all washed down by continual and torrential rainfall  :Ph

Thanks also for the idea of using reversal drones, guess I was looking at the very easy way (only).

Come to think of it I also play The Song of the Chanter with a D drone, thus requires a deal of cross row work and two bass buttons

Harry Cox's Schottische is great played in C on the G row of a DG with the C bass used as drones. You can do a good impression of a hurdy gurdy trompette using the chord to pulse the rhythm over the drone, works best without thirds.

Yes thats the one, just transpose it up to C. There is a third bit which might be part of another tune that I use for lead ins and outs and extra bits as needed (picked up from a longsword workshop).

Third time round the drone switches to the chord allowing the bass to be used for other things.
