Yay, melodeons at Witney! I'm going this year, for the first time. Quite some interesting workshops. I'm going for either A3 or A4, and B1. Can't decide on the Saturday..... probably will take what says more Basic than intermediate... which is Liam Robinson.
How does accommodation work over there, are there b&b's in Witney or is that another little hole like Mendlesham?  ;D
Hello Susi,
Don't delay in getting your application sent off. Some of the modules fill up very quickly and you may not get your first choice.
The accommodation list is available on the Hands On Music website here:
Witney accommodation list

There is quite a lot of B&B accommodation available in Witney, although it is best to book in as early as possible, as Melodeons at Witney is a very popular event. Witney is a buzzing little town, much larger than the village of Mendlesham. But please don't call Mendlesham a hole, as you will upset quite a few people  :(

I'm going too! (I'm a newbie - hello (:)

I'm really looking forward to it, but a bit nervous. I've been learning the melodeon since February and although I enjoy it enormously and I'm improving all the time I'm still pulling when I should be pushing and pushing when I should be pulling sometimes - then my brain gets totally muddled! There's still a few months to practice, so hopefully I will keep up with you all and not play too many bum notes!

I'm staying in a hotel that looks to be only a few minutes walk from the school. It doesn't look too bad. I found it by following the 'accommodation' link on the Hands on Music website.

Look forward to meeting some of you there - I'll be the one playing the F sharp instead of the G - ouch!

Welcome Lisa.

Witney is good fun and there are always plenty of folks there playing the wrong notes.

Well, it was a nice little place, I just think it should have at least one b&b. Even the little villages in the middle of nowhere out in West Cork have a b&b.. but I guess they're more touristy than Mendlesham.

Lisa, welcome! I'm quite a newbie too! I've been playing on and off since 2007, but mostly off  ;D I started playing more regularly just before Christmas, but especially this spring. I'm the one messing up the basses...:)

So I'm off to fill out the application form.

Thanks for the welcome  (:)  Nice to 'meet' you all.

Looks like I'll see you there Susi  (:)

I'm really looking forward to the pleasures and challenges of playing with other people. Does anyone know if they send the music in advance?

I've played 'safe' on the Saturday and chosen the Liam Robinson option for basic players as I think that will be really useful for me, but I've been more adventurous for the Sunday and gone for Saul Rose. I'm very excited about it all - just being around and involved in all that music will be a new experience for me and I can't wait! :||:

Welcome.

I went last year (disappointed I won't be going this year). Yes they do send the music out in advance....not that that did me any good as I was still writing out button numbers then and wrote them out wrong.
:-[ ooops.
Its taken me a year to digest all I learnt at witney and actually apply it. lol!

(Welcome to this friendly tribe!)  :|glug

Not only do you get the music in advance, you also get CD(s) with the pieces played by the tutors, each one at normal pace, then a simplified / slowed version too - so everyone's catered for!

It was my first one last year (started playing that Easter), and am really looking forward to this year's now....

Perhaps there should be a "melnet" badge / pin we could wear to identify at least who's on this forum (even if the names won't make sense ;))

If you each print your avatar picture and name, it should make quite a recognisable badge...

Rob.

edit: actually my Hook Eagles badge fits the bill - a picture of "Eric the Eagle" with "Rob2" on it!  No effort wasted on thought...

The announcement was wickedly timed wrt my holiday and my printer failed. I risked application by letter, but a reply has now come, seems all is well  :D

It's A5 "New Horizons", B3 "Blues", and the excellent Whitney Hotel, for me.  And of course all due thanks to Lester  :-* for keeping this forum posted

Er .. do I detect thread drift here?

Too much wine, as I recall...or perhaps don't recall might be a better phrase....that was after the party and session, though....

Why does that bring to mind the dead parrot sketch.

"E's not dead, just pining for a session"
"Pining for a session?!"
"Yes these melodeon players, are prone to pining for a session...and real ale-," says the shop keeper tapping the player on the shoulder. "Tell you what you can do, buy it a new box. It'll love that, perks 'em right up that does a new box. It'll be playing away in no time."
