Introduction thread/section?
« on: June 21, 2010, 11:44:44 AM »

Can we have an 'introduction' section.
As a sticky thread or section for new members to say hello and introduce themselves.
I know of three forums that do this (two as a seperate section and one as a sticky thread).
It encourages people to contribute more I find as they get that nervous 'first post' out of the way.

*coughs politely*
This is a thread suggesting an intro thread/section not a place to post your intro. ;)

Please don't start using this as a place for new members to introduce themselves!

This is a discussion about new features we would like to see.  I'll move the introduction that has appeared into general discussion.

Yes I know this is the case on forums,  but on the other hand we do get new members introducing themselves in the 'General Discussion' so I'm not sure its a problem as such.  I could put a sticky topic at the top of 'General Discussion' encouraging new members to introduce themselves there.

As a matter of interest we seem to get new member signups at the rate of about 2 a day (28 over the past two weeks) and that is after rejecting a similar number from know spammers.  About half of the new members never ever log in which I find odd.    Some of them may be spammers just lying low, but some are people who's names I recognise.

Can I just say in reply to the above that when I registered on here a couple of days ago I was sent an email saying

Before you can login and start using the forum, your request will be reviewed and approved. When this happens, you will receive another email from this address.

I was waiting for the email to arrive before I joined in but last night accidentally found that I could log in and use the forum. Maybe this is what's hapenning to your non posters?  (:)

I remember being somewhat bemused at the application process. (Now fully demented).
Theo should perhaps try applying for his own forum - to test out the overall process.
A 50% applicant loss is approaching that of the Western Front!

I've just signed up with a new id,  then approve myself - no email yet, but apart from that it seemed straightforward.   Its the confirmation email that seems to be the sticking point,  I've not received one yet.

I'll have to pass this one over to Clive as its not obvious to me where these email messages originate from.  They seem to be buried in the code somewhere!

Ditto, but I assumed someone could see I was trying on a regular (desparate ? - I was after Robin's 4 stop !) basis to access so t'was not needed - and given the day and night jobs and presumably sometime for the family / chores etc I was amazed how quick access was granted ;)

If there is some glitch that sends some of these off to cyber hell it might account for the level of uptake

It looks as if there may be a general problem with email notifications.   Is anyone receiving email notifications of replies to topics?

Clive has shown me the button that says "approve member and send email"   I'd been using a different method.  :|bl

I thunk we should start threads on our sophomores before they get a chance to post anything.   Been a while now, but AFAIR I came in to ..

Re: man with 3 row oakwood and french tunes??
I was at Bill McKinnons session at the Banbury Canalside Folk fest. in October and there was a guy playing a very nice oakwood. He wrote down some interesting discordant french tunes and players on a scrap piece of paper for me

Oh, that was Chris Ryall - I was 'otherwise engaged' at Banbury, but saw him about... give him a shout, he should be able to sort out what tunes they were...

It was a C#/D/G last time I saw it - still is as far as I know...Ed J

Crikey! My own thread ...   Hello to all. Especially Ed  (:), did your van der Aa come through OK?  That Oakwood got buggered about a bit ....

It seems the Oakwood is cursed .. I ordered my own van der Aa last August.

Please note this section is for discussing possible new things for melnet,  in this case the idea of a newbers area.  This is not a place for new members intros.  You are very welcome to introduce yourselves in General Discussion.
