Strathspeys
« on: June 24, 2010, 06:18:58 AM »

Honestly I didn't mean to post it. I recorded it during usual practice and sent it to several people to consult with. And one of them said "hope you post it on the forum". And I thought - he's right there're not too many Scottish tunes here. I hope some of you find it entertaining (:)

Nice.   I don't even have a token Stathspey at the moment, which is pretty shameful.

Great tunes and really nicely played. Bonny lass of bon accord is one of those beautiful tunes that can also be played slowed down or speeded up - doesn't necessarily need to be kept to strict tempo. I've just played along with you, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience  ;D

The box sounds very good. I particularly like this recording of Calum's Road (a relatively recent tune); it's better than the only other recording I have of it.

Calum's road is a lovely tune - a lovely rendition here. I must get round to reading the book. Only slightly off topic - is Bon Accord a place? I know another tune which I think is a strathspey, called 'Miss Irene Meldurme's welcome to Bon Accord'. Some places don't even one tune written in their honour let alone two, and possibly more.

In this case Bon Accord is Aberdeen, Bon Accord being the motto for Aberdeen and also the password used by Robert the Bruce and his men to initiate the recovery of Aberdeen from the English.
Another famous tune is 'Blooms of Bon Accord' for Cockers Roses, composed by James Scott Skinner as was 'The Bonnie Lass O' Bon Accord'.
The book 'Calum's Road' is a fascinating insight into island life and also how 'the State' closed small country schools and forced the bairns to leave their homes to get schooling elsewhere with the result that they never came back to live where they were born.

This  'Calum's Road' was written by Donald Shaw in honour of the road built by Calum MacLeod of Arnish, Raasay. The nearest road to his croft was two miles away at Brochel. He failed to persuade the council that they should to extend it to his house so Calum decided to build the road himself. With the help of information from books it took him ten years but the road was built!
Interesting but I feel the spirit of this tune fits both stories!

It's the same story I'm referring to, the building of the road is obviously the main part of the book but there were all the other things going on as well, fascinating read.

"Calum's Road" by Roger Hutchinson. Also available in hardback. Some useful customer reviews on this Amazon site.

Re: "Calum's Road" - the book

Prompted by earlier comments in this thread, I read the book "Calum's Road" this week, thanks to our local library. Of course, it includes his building of his road, but so much more - the historical context of Raasay clearances, and the social consequences of omissions and commissions (mostly the former) of various councils and governments in the twentieth century. Calum MacLeod was much more than a road builder; he was a hero of the Gaelic crofting way of life. A highly recommended read.

Very nice recording. I love the music of James Scott Skinner, especially Hector the Hero. There's a great website about him with his manuscripts and his own recordings. He started recording in 1899 on a Stroh fiddle. You can even hear him playing The Bonnie Lass o' Bon Accord.

Love that first tune - I recognize it from an Irish Rovers tune - they use it in The Braes O'Killicrankie on their Celtic Collection recording
Thanks!

Thanks for the posting! I'm just back from the wind swept west highlands and read Callum's Road while I was away. I've had the tune in my head for a while but you rendition (of both) is just great. Will try playing along when the fingers have defrosted.
