Gilles Chabenat (l'Impasse)
Chris Ryall:
I'd missed this video. The l' Impasse Chabenat tune swept France about 5 years ago
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MADCBYCXZ8
I've been churning it out at sessions over the past couple of summers, and have been delighted to have people come in and 'have a go' at improvised lines. The video states the tune nicely and then the 'Sales Gosses' are off in their usual manner. It's actually a very simple tune - I play it in Em as do the French - but for their accordeonists that's the 'crossed' minor. As the bass is so 'straight' you can play a very free right end against it - even on 2 rows.
Bass runs: In Em (for G/C kit). It's a 9/8 lilting mazurka so 3 chords per bar Bars 1+2 are same as 3+4
| Em - Dpull| C - - | Em - Dpull| C - - || G - -! D/F# - -| F - -| Em - - |
For 'messing about' - all the chords bar one are from the G scale - so any line on those G notes works. The C chord can be played either pull or push. Cpush is amazing - any note, on either main row seems to work!
Its 'B' music is set on a bass run, but if you don't have those basses just use D pull bar 2, C in bar 3. I'll re-post 'crossed' Bm chords for those who prefer it in that key (eg D/G 2 row players)
Chris Ryall:
l' Impasse chords in B minor are a more complete set on a D/G ...
| Bm - Apull| G - - | Bm - Apull| G - - || Dpush - -! *A - -| C - -| Bm - - |
That *A chord contains a C# so you 'hear' the run D>C#>C>B (:)
Again C chord works in both directions! - the F# tinkles 'lydian' brightness on push. If you prefer to pull the C chord .. I've been trying the F# blues scale (all on pull!) that Rees teaches - it works over both the A and C chords ;D
Apart from that C chord all the others use only notes of the D scale - so you can play anything on that row (over all chords).

Hiya Chris,
Thanks for that, it's a lovely tune. Another one for the 'to do' list.
Regards,
Tim
Gandy:
Thanks. Is the score for the melody posted anywhere? A generic Google search for "L'Impasse" turns up too much irrelevant stuff to be easily sifted through.
Simon:
Yes, here it is.
