Help finding ABC for "Sheriff's Ride"
« on: July 06, 2010, 06:34:29 PM »

Hello all-- I looked at my usual, trusty site http://www.ucolick.org/~sla/morris/music/abclib.html and a few others but could not find.  Appreciate any suggestions.  Also, what "tradition" is it?

Saw on Youtube "Once every year since 1553 the Sheriff of Lichfield has made his tour of the city boundaries. This clip shows arrival at the Cathedral and final farewells at the Guildhall."  Is there a connection with the Morris tune? (Must be?).  It's a nice tune, why not more popular?

It is quite a popular tune, a variant of 'Raggle Taggle Gypsies'.

I strongly suspect that tha man who collected the dances and tunes of the Lichfield Tradition (relatively recently - ie within living memory), also gave many of the names, though I have no evidence of this. They are all very good dances/tunes anyway!  :M :||: :Ph

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Indeed, I've met him! In fact, he still dances/plays/fools with Stafford Morris Men. Lichfield is, although a 'reconstructed' tradition, pretty much made up.

If you follow the link I gave above to the Morris Ring site it gives source info:

Sources: Jour EFDSS Vol. VIII No 2, 1957 (compiled by Alex Helm). This tells of the recovery of the Litchfield tradition, and contains most of the authentic material available; it derives mainly from notations of three unknown collectors in 1898/99 (RD believes 10 years later), and from a 1924/25 dancer. It leaves room for interpretation, and I am indebted for much help to Jack Brown (JB) of the Staffordshire Morris Men and John Venables of the Green Man's Morris (GMM). There are minor differences in performance between these two clubs, which have specialised in the tradition.

Praise be to God! I met him a few years ago at the Lichfield Ale, but did not even hope he might still be alive. A lovely man! Has anybody asked him the SF question?
