I suppose it's fine for members like Lester and Anahata as the names are not common. For the Johns and Pauls etc. of this parish, they probably will have to give a full name and that becomes a bit formal. Personally, I think the system is fine as it is and don't want to play the game of who was who  :P

Don't worry about it and just squeeze  8)

Cheers
Sandy

I think I must be either weird-looking or not photogenic (or possibly both) because I cannot find a photo of me that I'm prepared to display.........The strange-looking woman with the grimacing "melodeon face".... that's me!

And me!

I've decided to be known by my name from now on. Not sure why really!  :||:

Pardon me for asking, but who were you? ;)

exactly. The most useful purpose of a name on a discussion forum is so that we can identify a poster in terms of connecting them with their other posts.
As far as meeting people in 'real life' is concerned, I have no more chance of recognising (say) Marje, should I meet her, on the basis of information she has given, than she would of recognising me. I don't find this a worry or a risk.
I posted a reference to Romeo and Juliet earlier in this thread. The quote was "What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."
As it happens it isn't at all hard to find out my 'real' name from my profile. But I don't see why I should feel pressured into using it in my posts.

My personal view, for what it's worth, is that some folk are taking this thread just a trifle too seriously.

As a relative newcomer, I hope I do not come across as being a bit presumptious but I do think this thread should be treated in perhaps a more lighthearted manner. If members wish to use a 'forum name', all well and good. If they are happy to use their real name, for whatever reason, then that is also fair enough.

I cannot see the need to castigate one or the other for their views for, as far as I am concerned, we are all here to share our views of the 'world of the melodeon' and for the more experienced to help beginners like myself to progress and improve for which, speaking for myself, I will be eternally grateful.

Personally, I have found the explanations for the forum names used most interesting! :||:

I am not keen on my handle which would, under this rule, be "Badly"

My name is Chris Brownbridge and I fiddle for Ebor Morris. I have actually been recognised by Melnet members who've seen me fiddle! I use this pseudonym for everything I join online, just bto keep things simple and so my memory doesn't get too confused.  :|glug

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

It's getting a bit like an AA group meeting 'round here  ;)
What's with the sudden need for folk to 'fess up to their real names. Why? Stoppit now! Let's get back to good ol' fashioned anonymity. It's so much more fun. Chris will always be 'Ebor Fiddler' to me - and why not? 'Jilly' is in fact 'Pete' (oh aye - these forum names can be so much fun!) - and Louise, although I've always known your name, I've always considered 'Ziachmusi' such a great name, and looks like I'm going to miss it now  :'( I'm still trying to work out 'Rees' real identity (but then so are lots of people I suspect  ;D) - real names takes away some of the fun of this forum. Let's not spoil it?

I am just suddenly wondering if we met you at Chippenham, or at least heard you to great acclaim playing in the Dartmoor style in the Pete Coe-led English tunes session?

I draw a distinction online -- I have a pseudonym that I use consistently for forums and online sites -- loads of people therefore know it's me. But on Facebook and a few other places I use my real name. I used my real name here because when Theo started the new forum he did ask people to use real names if possible. But my normal preference (I have been online a very long time) is in general not to use my real name, to ensure that a casual search of my name doesn't turn up all my forum postings.

PS, it would be good if all the people who've 'come out', especially regulars, could say what their previous forum name was...

As you say, jb, the name doesn't automatically identify the person if you happen to meet in real life. But if you get to the point where names are exchanged or even overheard, you're much more likely to realise that this is the Melnet member you've been communicating with online.

This is not necessarily what every one will want, and I wouldn't for a minute want anyone to feel "pressured" into giving their real name - or indeed into thinking up a pseudonym just because it's expected. Some do, some don't, some adopt a half-way position by giving a brief first name (as I do) or initials, while others use a pseudonym but add a sig in their real name. Fair enough. But it's interesting reading why people have chosen any of these alternatives.

I have a habit of calling people by their pseudonyms anyway....and I've had 'lurkers' from this forum come up and ask if I'm LDT (yes you who told me at the stepdance day to keep asking the questions). So I can't be that hard to spot. lol!

This was a printing mistake on a poster for a gig that I was organising.
"Tickets available from Reg Wilson"

Some people still call me Reg to this day.
I've also used it on a couple of CDs when I perform a banjo accompaniment.
I credit the banjo player as being Reg Wilson, having no wish to be known as a banjoist!
