Fortunately, the condition of owning a banjo is reversable...... :Ph

...by breaking into the car of another banjo player and leaving yours there. ;D

You obviously don't have this kind of (armed) support team, then.

210 bpm! He's bonkers.

For what (little) it's worth, John is what my parents called me, Jones is the surname, and many years ago, a friend at university, discovering that I had a rare ability to bark like an alsatian, coined the moniker 'Johnjo the Wonderdog'. Thankfully, only the first bit stuck.

Now here's a leap of logic that's probably way off the mark. You wouldn't happen to be from the shouting end of life would you?

Sorry if that's a bit cryptic folks but if Johnjo is who I think he might be he'll understand.

You don't play the banjo do you? Only I was just thinking about another name extension for you ... Banjo JohnJo ... but that's a bit tricky to get right after a couple of pints  ;)

My name is Dave and I play the accordion.

What more do you need to know?

Specific personal information shall remain a mystery.

We seemed to have moved on since this started - but the reason I hide behind a pseudonym, and I'm sure I've said this before, is that my real first name/surname combination is virtually unique (well I'm the only one that ever comes up on Google) and I don't feel comfortable divulging my full name and the stuff I'm up to on a fairly open forum (I'm real on Facebook but that's fairly locked down). My pseudonym is a play on my name.

Being serious I think it is an interesting issue.  I suspect it depends on whether you know or may know people in real life or whether the net is pretty well the only way you'll meet.

One forum I belong to is quite insistent that even if it's not your user name your real name should be known and a lot of us have actually met in real life.  It also has a level of flaming and trolling that is almost non-existant (like here). I suspect that a lot of the longer term inhabitants here also know full well who they all are and so the same kind of netiquette grows up.

From a personal point of view I quite to know if I'm meeting someone I "know" on-line in real life.  Because my real-life persona is fairly public (if you visit York) I also find it disconcerting if (as happened on Mudcat) someone uses my public persona to insult me. Mudcat is also (IMHO) an example of what can happen with too much anonimity.

I think it's curious that so many posts in this thead equate forum-names with anonymity.  That aspect does exist, of course, but it's already a common practice here for people to use an alias for their forum ID but also to give their name and identity in a signature, in personal links or simply in the post's text.  So, there's more to it than just wanting to hide.

Personally, I think forum names tend be more memorable, distinctive and contextual than many real names and are worth sticking with if you've already established something that you and others are happy using.

1 - oggiesnr - I think I know who you might be! But I'm not telling (in case I'm wrong and get embarrassed.  :|bl)
2 - Forum names are fun!  :D

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Don't be intimidated, Banjo Ray, there are probably more banjoes (banji?) lurking among us than anyone might think....together with mandolinos, waldzithers, harmoniums, organettos, aeolas, crumhorns, nyckellharpas, you name it! ;)

What an interesting thread.

I originally chose Easedale (a Lake District valley) as it's always been my habit to use a pseudonym on forums. You don't want to be identified.

That was of course, before I found out what a friendly supportive place MelNet is, so in recognition of that following earlier advice I've changed my name to its real moniker.

Added my banjo to instrument list.  Owner and player of the two most dissed instruments (dissed by those who don't know better).

All you need now is a set of bagpipes.  ;D
