Poll: Tune of the Month for August 2010
« on: July 26, 2010, 09:43:40 AM »

Off we go again! Please vote away...

I'm also in two minds about the theme of the month this month; considering Music Hall and Tunes from France particularly. Any strong preferences for these or any other, please post here.

Cheers,

Clive

Is this the same tune as Duchess Dressed in Blue, which as far as I can tell, doesn't exist

I think so, or if not it's heavily related. I learned it from Rod Stradling's recordings I think, and he referred to it as Duchess...

I would normally play it in D though.

Cheers,
Clive

I'd personally prefer tunes from France (and I have a feeling it would get more responses).

What's the nutting girl?

A rather stonking morris tune, probably most famous from its inclusion on 'Morris On'. There's also a song version of it on the Morris On album too.

Here you can see them both, played by the recent live Morris On assembly (song first, then tune starts at roughly 2:56)

the tune isn't really 'grabbing' my imagination.  :-\
Maybe I'll wait for the melnet versions.  :||: :M

Not Nutting Girl! I have no good feeling towards that tune, because all it does is remind me of how exhausting the dance is!  ::)

Fair 'nough! I think you'll grow to like it - it's one of my favourite tunes for sessions; I tend to play it with Princess Royal (standard version in G).

Dark Girl (or Duchess) Dressed in Blue is another of my favourites; I'm surprised we haven't considered it before...

Cheers,

Clive

Its one of those tunes I keep hearing and thinking "I like that" but not knowing the title. lol!
You see if that wins...you might get to see my blue Edwardian 'duchesses' hat in a video. ;)

Quick! Everyone change your vote! It's very hard to find a "decent" version of this tune on youtube; Peter Trimming plays a nice version on concertina, but he's changing octave a lot due to the limitations of his instrument, so it's not very good to learn off. There also seems to be a (completely different) Irish tune with the same name. But Spotify users can find a cracking version of it (labelled 'The Duchess Dressed in Blue') on Tiger Moth's album 'Mothballs Plus'.

Cheers,

Clive

No, Nutting Girl it must be. Cracking tune for morris jigs, cracking tune full stop. Also, the lyrics are plenty of fun if anyone wants to sing it.

Though I say so myself, I think there's a reasonably decent version here (not YouTube)http://www.ethelscats.co.uk/music.php
4th set down, Dark Girl starts at about 1'50"

(I didn't even vote for this one, but whatever  :-\ )

As with other Morris tunes, there are many versions of the Nutting Girl. My favourite is the Fieldtown version.

Heh. I was just thinking yesterday how this is probably the only 'classic' English session tune that Spiers and Boden hadn't yet recorded! Nope, they've done it already!

Re the theme of the month - I'd strongly back French Tunes, I think they may be easiet to source and more widely played...
...and of course, I can play some French tunes already!
