My melodeon buttons keep beaking
« on: April 14, 2008, 12:10:21 PM »

I am quite new to the Melodeon - about 18 months.  During this period I have had two melodeons - the first a Scarlleti - the buttons (bass) totally collapsed.  So!  I purchased a Hohner Erica about three months ago - lo and behold my Chord (push) D collapsed.  Is it me?  What might I be doing wrong or am just unlucky with the insruments that I have bought?  Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me.

Thanks

Peter C

Peter, that's a puzzler. I've had an Erica for about 25 years and the only breakage has been a spring on a bass button. I've never heard your problem happening to anyone else before. Unless you are overdoing the force on the buttons I haven't a clue.

Just thought, maybe Theo might have come across the problem as a repairs expert.

I've only come across broken buttons on very old (1930s and earlier) boxes where a different plastic was used which gets brittle over time.

Peter when you say the button "collapsed"  do you mean the white plastic button fell apart, fell off, or the lever it sits on got bent?  Perhaps you could post a photo of the damage.
