Tune of the Month for August 2010 - The Nutting Girl
« on: August 01, 2010, 12:41:24 AM »

By the narrowest of margins (I had to use my casting vote, or to be more accurate, remove my casting vote), our winning tune this month is The Nutting Girl. This is another great morris tune from England; one of my absolute favourites actually.

Like many of these tunes, it comes in many flavours, of which courtesy of the classic 'Morris On' album of the 1970's, this is probably the most famous:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IGV9dVQhD0

(here you get both the song version, and the more common tune starting at 2:56)

Hopefully some kind soul will be along soon to post some ABC's for us all!

I expect August to be quite a quiet month for postings; it's holiday season in the Northern hemisphere, and in the UK there are 2 major folk weeks during August that will eat people's time. However, please try and give it a go anyway; TOTM is best when lots of people contribute, and if you haven't done so before please consider doing so this month - just learning it up for recording gives new players something to work for, and experienced players can often discover entirely new and different ways of approaching the tune!

Good luck (and let's play it lots at Sidmouth/Whitby sessions too!)

Clive

Hello - not posted for a while, and just back from hols!

Found these two versions at http://www.themorrisring.org/more/Tunes/abc/Bampton.abc, as a starting point.

They seem to work OK with my version of ABC navigator.

Looks like I'm first up for this tune then!

Here we go:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gop4M9LcxZI

It's not trying to adhere to any of the particular morris version out there; it just potters along its own merry way, like a happy mongrel.

Woof!

Clive

I didn't know this tune at all.  Googled and found it on the Hammersmith Morris website. Have tried to learn this version from Ian Dedic's playing as I have just started playing for morris. Kept it raw with no reverb. (and you might just hear a door open when my son comes in the room asking for some coco-rocks  :o)

Played on a Hohner pressed wood (DG)  :|||:

Dino Baffetti, Carnival II (I think - bought secondhand from Hobgoblin), D/G.

That's a stunning version by Sandra - and lacking in such delicacy and style, I'll just give it a good old stomp... This my first attempt at TOTM but I've enjoyed the many inputs by others.

Its on OMVoice thingy since that supports MP3s which are better (less compressed?) than Youtubes ...

the link is ...

Sandy, that was lovely!!! Very nicely played!
Mike, will explore yours later - onmvoice and ipad (I visited Castelfidardo and the only toy I brought home was an iPad,  ;D) don't seem to be friends.

Very few recordings this month! Is this another less enjoyed tune or are people away in holidays?
I just started working on it. There's still hope. Nice tune!

Well, it got quite a lot of votes, so while I expected it to be a little quiet this month, I'm surprised by how just how few people have had a shot at it so far. I don't think it's terribly hard to learn, maybe unless you try and reproduce one of the traditional morris versions *exactly*, and it is a cracking tune.

We've got some really nice recordings to learn off now, so if you haven't already, please give it a try - there's a week left!

Cheers,

Clive

Last month people said they didn't like it because it was one of the beginner tunes that kids kill on the recorder... ;) I liked it though.

A different take on the Nutting Girl - this time it's turned into a minor key (C minor actually), and played on a Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb - a recent ebay purchase, rebuilt for me by ace melodeon restorer Mike Rowbotham.
If the sound on this video is a little iffy, it's my recording (oops, deleted the main sound file, had to use the backup), not the melodeon!

Here you go!
