I know this has been mentioned before so I apologise for repeating myself but could someone please advise me again on how to get a picture onto my profile.
The problem I get is when I try to upload one of my own pictures, it comes out as a red cross. Did you say that this is because it is too big or something? If so, what size does it have to be?
Thanks!

Profile pictures should by 90 pixels square, or smaller.

When I look at the properties of my pictures, they all seem to be about 2500 to 3000 pixels in width and height. When I reduce one to 90 pixels square it just goes all blurry? Any ideas?

Unless your original pic is absolutely square, don't make both height and width 90 pixels. Make the longest side 90 pixels and keep the same aspect ratio.

Remember that when you reduce your picture size by that amount, a lot of detail will inevitably be lost and there will be a certain amount of blurriness. Therefore the main subject of your original size photo needs to be relatively large in the frame to begin with. Try using a square crop (with resampling to preserve the large pixel size) on your original size photo first, to maximise your subject into the frame, and then reduce the pixel size.

If you still have problems, contact me via PM and I will do it for you.

Are you watching the 90 pixel picture at 100%? After scaling down from a large image some programs use the same screen area and blow up the low-resolution picture so something large on screen. It's amazing how recognisable a small image can be at 100%, even though it looks terrible if you watch it at say 400%.

It's as much art as science. I use free picture editor Irfanview (excellent) and simply crop a stock image as much as I can, then do a 'resize' down to within the 902 allowed. My present one was saved as a GIF, and then I put top and bottom transparent borders in - otherwise the melnet kit did it's own squaring up and cut off my trumpet  :-[

So it's basically "fiddle about" following the advice of this thread. It is effective to open two windows or tabs. One to a thread you've posted into, and another to the melnet profile editor.  Make a change, then refresh the first window and see how it looks.  Takes about 5 minutes.

If you find this a challenge - well take up folkman's kind offer. This is a genuinely friendly and helpful place .. provided you say nothing nasty about melodeons.  :|glug

Thanks Steve, much appreciated! I will have another go over the next day or so and see what happens.

My picture has gone missing and I'm a humble red cross again. Is someone trying to tell me something? ???

Yes indeed - we lost a few attachment files. If you upload it again, you should be fine.
