The Trip to Stowmarket
« on: August 08, 2010, 11:45:48 PM »

Hi,
Steve Freereeder wrote this tune. Where can I find either the ABCs or the music? I tried to search for it, but with no luck.
Thanks,
Paul N.

Katie tells me that the tune has now become part of the Polkworks repertoire and was performed at Sidmouth.
<blush>

Polkaworks are appearing at Towersey, so listen out for it there too!

Never heard it before. A very pretty ditty, and pretty 'B' part too. It nicely avoids the melodeonic thing of a lovely 'A' coupled with a duller 'B' as composer wondered 'what next ..')  So doubly well done, Steve

OK a technical issue (or otherwise). I hadn't expected s a polka. While I don't play a lot of  'Trip to' tunes myself, but all those I'm aware of are in 6/8. Is there any convention about this?  This is pure ignorance on my part - composers may of course name their tune any way they choose  ;)

Terrific! That's going straight into the Ethel's Cats repertoire (I'm trying to keep an East Anglian flavour to our tune sets), and in the original key ;D

I have no idea whether this is a convention. If it is, I've never heard of it before.
The tune and title came to me after a lovely weekend at an early EATMT gathering in Haughley and Stowmarket. The tune was one of those which just 'wrote' itself as I was noodling around on my one-row four-stop.

Polkaworks played some great gigs at Sidmouth and Dartmoor. They also ran a storming session at Dartmoor yesterday lunchtime - what a band!

I shall be purloining your tune for my new dance band, Windjammer (played in C of course).
I'm running a C session at Stowmarket Traditional Music Day on September 4th so will teach it to all and sundry.

Thanks Steve, great tune.

I think it's just coincidence that you've found a few tunes with a similar title that happened to be in 6/8 Chris. The attached PDF is for a tune called A Trip To The Bath from the Joshua Jackson manuscript, it's in 2/4.

Now I know therr is a debate about how many fingers to use on the bass end but how do you play it with just a hook.   ;D

Trip to Brighton isn't in 6/8. A quick search on Folk Tune Finder suggests it is not alone.

Great tune Steve! I'm afraid I'll have to transpose to D to learn it.  :-[
