ABC converter bookmarklet
« on: August 09, 2010, 03:12:10 PM »

Hello,

I was getting bored of pasting ABC from the forum (and other places) into an ABC viewer so I wrote a bookmarklet to do it. It allows you to highlight some ABC and immediately see it rendered as dots. Maybe it would be useful to others here?

To use it you need to save the bookmarklet into your browser bookmarks. Then when you see some ABC you can select it with the mouse and click the bookmark. You will be taken to the Montreal Session Tunebook pages where they have an ABC converter and the selected ABC will be loaded and converted for you.

The bookmarklet is here: http://jim.hawkridges.co.uk/abcbookmarklet

I've tested it in IE 8, Firefox 3.5 and Chrome. Let me know if you have any problems or can think of any improvements.

Edit: IE 6 appears not to be supported (sorry).

Cheers,
Jim

Nothing happened. I just get a blank text box and have to paste in myself (MSIE-6)  Should it copy and process automatically or what?

As for improvements - 'fraid I like to hear the tune.  Dot is only slightly better than ABC to an ear player. Chris

Yes it should copy and paste automatically - that's the point of it really! I haven't tested on IE6 though. I will dig out my IE6 and try it out.

On the matter of hearing the tune - the converter does generate midi (but that part is nothing to do with me do no credit to me for that (:) ).

That's great, Jim, thanks very much! The first thing I want to do with ABC is convert it to dots, and your bookmarklet works perfectly. (I was using the Montreal Session Tunebook converter anyway).

We'll you got further than me then - I couldn't get it to work in IE6 at all ???. Either way it appears that there is some constraints (bookmarks can have at max 508 characters) in IE6 that are likely to prevent it ever working. Sorry about that.

Al, I've just tried it in Firefox and it works fine. Are you following Jim's instructions? Put his bookmarklet in your Bookmarks list (it says ABC to Tadpoles). Highlight the ABC, then go to your bookmarks and click "ABC to Tadpoles". On mine, it brought up the Montreal Session Tunebook Converter in a separate tab, with the score of my chosen tune filled in. The normal Montreal options incl pdf and midi are then available as usual.

With IE8, I had to allow pop-ups from melodeon.net as the converter loads in a new window, rather than a new tab.

Works nicely in Safari 4.1.1 for Mac OS.
Thanks, Jim!

However, personally I probably won't use it very much, as I already use Barfly with all its great functionality for all my ABC stuff.
