session tunes
« on: August 19, 2010, 10:22:09 PM »

So far I've picked up tunes from Mally's book and one or two other sources such as workshops. However in my very limited experience of sessions only one or two have turned up over quite a long time of sitting :-[. Can the Wise ones give us a short list of tunes that are most likely to appear in any English session please? I know everyone will have a different list so how about one each? If I have half a dozen I will feel more confident at being able to participate - and I promise to leave off the basses and keep to time with the one who started the tune Honest!  ;D

its very difficult to provide such a shortlist as different regular sesssions tend to have their own repertoire to some degree.  However the following 6 are my best shot at  a 'fit all' list1

winster gallop, salmon tails, harvest home, jamie allen, oyster girl, speed the plough.  I think most sessions would include at least one of these!. To put it in context I use a backup list (crib sheet) with over 150 tunes  w hen running sessions at Whitby ,this enables me to  only play tunes that at least a third of those present (& hopefully more) can have a go at. - even then many tunes not on my crib sheeet  get played!

In many ways session playing is more about quantity than quality i.e. its better to be able to play  bit of many tunes rather than perfect renderings of a few which may not get played. The bits you play then gradually expand into larger bits until they turn into whole tunes.!

I'd be interested to see your 150 tune crib sheet George.

One day I will learn the fast bit in Harvest Home.

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Lester's lists are invaluable, but they don't really address Peter's original question because he wanted about half a dozen tunes to learn that crop up regularly in sessions. As George said, different tunes crop up at different sessions, but here for what it is worth is my list. I have deliberately omitted ones in George's list to avoid duplication, although I agree that all of them crop up fairly regularly.

My list comprises Harper's Frolic/Bonny Kate, Bear Dance, Three Around Three, Galopede, Michael Turner's Waltz, Soldier's Joy and Horses Brawl/Morico - slightly more than the six Peter requested, but they all crop up regularly in the sessions I attend.

You might be my saviour!  I agree, technology is great (when it works), but I can't seem to get on with the tunebook app.  So, two questions.
a/ is there a way to delete individual tunes that you have imported, and
b/ how do you import a file (like Lester's) that you have downloaded to your computer?  If I remember rightly, you need to specify a URL to import, don't you?  Or am I being stupid (which is highly feasible)?
Any help would be gratefully accepted.
And thank you, Lester, for that wonderful list!!

Hi Ollie-tunebook app for iPod? I've heard of this (I mean the app, not the iPod-I've just been given one of these!)-can you shed any light on what it is and where to get it....and then how to put the Black Book, or any other useful tune stuff on it too?
Many thanks, Guy

And also HUGE thanks to Lester for the tunes-a great resource, and reminded me of many old favourites to re-learn as well as some new to me. That's the winter evenings sorted out then....

Guess my session list should come with a minor heath warning - because I learned on a 1 row in G I only really know what button does what in G so for ease of learning I usually transpose everything into G  :|bl.

Also it is a dropbox file so gets automatically updated every time I add something so chnages resonably often.

I was sorely tempted having seen my Belgian friend Peiter do chords on the thing (piano keyboard) - but others tell me it isn't all that good 'as a phone'  :|glug

It's adequate as a phone. But as making phone calls is about 1% of what I do on my iPhone, I really don't mind. It's great for everything else. And Tunebook is even better on the iPad than it is on the iPhone. Truly amazing. I recommend Movie Peg to prop it up with.

a/ is there a way to delete individual tunes that you have imported, and
b/ how do you import a file (like Lester's) that you have downloaded to your computer?  If I remember rightly, you need to specify a URL to import, don't you?  Or am I being stupid (which is highly feasible)?

You delete tunes by swiping across them in the list (the standard iPhone delete gesture). Tunebook won't import a zip file, or a cut and paste long list of tunes. I have never managed to get the internal web server to work. So I do long chunks of abc by posting them to eg a blogging site like Posterous and then importing from that URL. Clunky but effective.

Thanks, Alison.  I can now delete individual tunes, but also, thanks to your tip about Posterous, I have managed to import Lester's file as a tunebook into the app.  Fantastic!

And thank you, Lester, for that wonderful list!!

Not sure about deleting individual tunes, but I can help with b. I'll use Lester's file as an example.

  • Open the app on your iPod
  • Click on the 'manage' tab at the bottom
  • Select 'import tunes'
  • You now use this like a web browser. Type in the forum address, surf the forum until you find this thread, and find Lester's post.
  • Click on the link in Lester's post, then the large red 'import' tab. It will then ask you if you want to create a tunebook. Click yes.

The tunes should then import! Sames goes if you want the Black Book, but go to the Morris Ring website, and click on the Black Book abc files. You have to do each tradition individually, but it allows you to create tunebooks of each tradition. Hope that helps.  (:)
