Tune of the Month for September 2010 - The Liberty Bell
« on: August 31, 2010, 10:02:51 PM »

Well, we should get at least 16 submissions for TOTM this month!  ;D

Winner this month, despite my last minute attempt to overtake it, is The Liberty Bell, a march written by John Philip Sousa. Lots more information about it here at Wikipedia, but suffice to say, it's the Monty Python theme!

Here's a simplified version, suitable for D/G melodeon, courtesy of Lester:

Here's how the tune as originally written:

As an American with a deep and abiding love for the Pythons, I could not be any happier with the choice. And I am dutifully working on it, as per the threats of those in the voting thread.

I think that this could be a nice outing for my battered, out of tune, disreputable but most importantly extremely inexpensive CF club.

I will need to learn this out of Python duty but am not overly keen on it. Fortunately I've been learning 'Herbert the Sherbert' on my holibobs   :D

For further inspiration there's a piano score from 1893 and even an 1896 recording.

Theme of the Month for July 2010 - Music You Wouldn't Expect on a Melodeon

It would be a doddle on a B/C/C# - made for that sort of music.
I used to play The Washington Post in my B/C/C# days.
That is another Sousa march with a John Cleese connection: th elast strain theof is The Rhubarb Tart Song - not Monty Python but ISIRTA, I think.

I think I probably had a go at the Liberty Bell too, come to think of it.

This seems like a very good recording to start this off with.  Since it's obvious that a piece of music scored for full marching band will never fully fit on a simple diatonic instrument, the trick with this TOTM will surely be more about arranging key elements into something that works on its own terms.  I think that's exactly what you've done here.  It'll be interesting to see which people are also willing to go ahead and ask themselves 'now, what can I do with this...'.  It is, after, all just a straightforward rumpty-tumpty tune at heart.

We need an applauding emoticon for occasions like this! Clap, clap, clap etc.....
Thanks Lester  (:)

Did you use the ABC's above for this? I am finding it hard to make my music sound anything like the tune!! This is probably a bad case of a 'tradesman blaming his tools' though.

I've had an idea for the second part of the tune. It's supposed to change key from G to C (or the same relative key from whatever it started in) and the simplified versions stay in G which is certainly easier.
Starting in D and going to G doesn't make the first tune fit very well on the instrument, but it is possible to go from G to D, which is the wrong relative key shift compared to the original, but at least it's a key change. Playing the second part of the tune in D allows liberal deployment of three accidentals in places where they make a big difference.

That will be the basis of my contribution when sufficient round tuits arrive.

Young Anahata's a far better musician than I'll ever be, but

  http://www.mutopiaproject.org/ftp/SousaJP/TheLibertyBell/TheLibertyBell-a4.pdf ???

I read this as F modulating up a couple of times into C.  I've been struggling with the G+G version as a. it conflicts with what I hear in my head and b. I was having some difficulty finding a chromatic run that'll take you back into the same key! All is now revealed.

btw they sell square tuits here in Sukamvit, but in rather garrish colours. I might find you some round ones in Helsinki on the way back - they defo have inuits in the north part of the country. :)

I read this as F modulating up a couple of times into C.

It goes briefly into C at the end of the first 16 bar section, but I was talking about the final part which is
clearly in B flat.

Thanks for the link to the piano score though - that's a great resource for a more elaborate and complete interpretation (not on any melodeon of mine though - maybe an arrangement for various instruments)

EATMT trad music day today - more later...

I suspect this is waaaay beyond me as a beginner, but I thought I'd transpose Lester's simple version into dots using the Montreal Tunebook converter and simply take a look.
I've cut-and-pasted it into the converter but it only produces one line of dots, so not sure what's happened!
any ideas?
