It goes briefly into C at the end of the first 16 bar section, but I was talking about the final part which is  clearly in B flat.

:o So there's a second page!  www connection was pretty dubious in Thailand even from quite a nice hotel and I suspect the PDF protocol had only showed me the page it'd managed to obtain.

Er, yes, two flats was Bb when I last counted them. My apologies. Scottish chamber orchestra http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qduVoDHsjRQ can probably be relied on to get it right and the 'Python' version that comes up too on youtube sounds the same to me - but worra lot of notes!

Actually I'm only here for the crack   :|glug

I suspect this is waaaay beyond me as a beginner, but I thought I'd transpose Lester's simple version into dots using the Montreal Tunebook converter and simply take a look.
I've cut-and-pasted it into the converter but it only produces one line of dots, so not sure what's happened!
any ideas?
cheers
Q

Works OK for me at the Montreal Tunebook Converter and the c.net Convertamatic. Try again and if you still have a problem I will provide the PDF

Hi Lester,
just tried Montreal converter again - no go, I only get part of a line.
Popped it into the concertina one - bingo, I'm sorted!
thanks for your offer of a pdf, but now I think I'm ok.
cheers

I had the same experience (with there appearing to be only one line of the ABC converted) but if you click on pdf in the top right hand corner (in brackets just above the line of the tune) you get all of the tune in a pdf file. Sounds like you have it sorted now, but for future reference this might be worth trying.

I think something is up with that converter. I tried transposing down from C to G, but the converter transposed to F! In order to get G, I had to tell it to transpose down to A. Oddly, when transposing up, it works fine.  ???

I had a go at filming this earlier today.  In hindsight, it probably could have done with some more practice, as the box gremlins were certainly giving me a hard time.  Anyhow, this is what I've managed so far...

Brilliant! But tell me, do you always wear your jacket over your melodeon straps? What next? Underpants over trousers?

You need to double de-clutch young man.

Driving lessons just aren't what they used to be mumble ... mumble

... just been playing the two recrodings so far as I typed the above. Both are absolutely super, inspirational, and defo a 'tune not expected' on our instrument. Thanks chaps.

I'm not old enough! (yet... three months to go...)  :P

Melodeon man. Is it a bird, is it a plane... No, damn it, it's a melodeon.

Um.

Here's another recording of a band doing the whole thing in 1910.

nb. the link is to a web page despite the ".ogg" extention.

Whilst I don't always do it that way, I use the jacket-over-the-straps trick a lot more since I started using a back strap.  It's more comfortable and looks neater.

As for the underpants - yeah, I've done that in the past, too.   :|bl

You are right in that it could do with a little more practice in places (there is one chord which sounds wrong, can't remember where), but that is a fantastic and very musical recording (:) Enjoyed it very much; finding this month's tune very daunting. May try tomorrow if I can work up the courage.

Yes, I'd initially pondered doing something like that - it would have been a fun thing to try.  In the end, though, as I wasn't really good enough to actually play the music as well as I'd hoped, I thought it best not to waste too much time on it.  If I can manage to improve it sufficiently, I might try replacing it at some point.

While googling for the Hohner history books for their 100th & 150th anniversaries I came across this snippet which, given the title and some of the contents of this thread makes sense to place here (I hope)

"In 1896 Hohner introduced its most successful model of all time, The Marine Band. Its name refers to the U.S. Marine Corp. band, whose conductor, John Philip Sousa, played harmonica and endorsed Hohner instruments. Aimed primarily at the U.S. market, the Marine Band model has remained one of the company's best sellers for over 100 years. "

So maybe one should expect Liberty Bell to be played on harmonicles and it's not much of a jump to take it to THE premier instrument, where free reads are not expected to sound whilst awash in a sea of saliva  :o
